Business Professors Receive International Recognition by Peers

Two business administration professors at the University of New Brunswick received international recognition this month for their contributions to the study and service of industrial engineering and operations management. At the 2012 Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM) conference held in Istanbul, Dr. Abdur Rahim received the Outstanding Educator Award and Dr. Robert Austin received the Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Rahim is a member of the quantitative analysis area in the faculty of business administration where he has been teaching courses in management science, operations management, quality control and inventory control since 1983. The Outstanding Educator Award recognizes an individual’s outstanding lifelong contribution, dedication, support, and service in education to industrial engineering and operations management professions.

Dr. Robert Austin is Dean of the faculty of business administration at UNB; he joined the faculty in July 2011 and teaches courses in innovation, information technology management and operations management. The IEOM Distinguished Service Award recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves through lifelong professional support and service in the professions of industrial engineering and operations management.

The Global Forum on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM) was established to provide a forum for academics, researchers and practitioners to exchange ideas and recent developments in the field of Industrial Engineering and Operations Management. The conference also fosters networking, collaboration and joint effort among the conference participants to advance the theory and practice as well as to identify major trends in Industrial Engineering and Operations Management.

The 2012 IEOM conference took place in Istanbul from July 3rd to the 6th.  With a focus this year on continuous improvement for quality and service, 591 papers were presented representing 59 countries. Dr. Austin was one of four keynote speakers featured during the conference.  The title of his presentation was The Soul of Design: Value Creation in the Age of Apple. Dr. Rahim served as chair for a session on Operations Research.
