UNB Finance Club Advances in Global Case Competition

Three business students from the University of New Brunswick's Finance Club are off to Vancouver to compete in a global finance case competition.   The students comprise one of 12 teams who earned a spot in the second round of Simon Fraser University's Finance International Case Competition based on a case study which they submitted to a professional panel to review.

Twenty-six teams of business students from 17 universities around the world evaluated a preliminary case to determine who would progress to the second round from the qualifying round.   Universities from around the world competed in the preliminary round including Queen's University of Kingston, Ontario; Singapore Management University and the University of Colorado.

In the qualifying round teams submitted a written report based on a case study of Flash Memory Inc., a firm founded in San Jose, California during the high tech boom of the late 1990s.  The small company operates in the computer electronic device memory market.

Only teams with top potential advance and interact with professionals in the next round which takes place between November 12 and 14, 2010 at Simon Fraser University.  The second round teams of participants will be given a more stringent case, a real-world problem,  and only a few hours to design a solution to the quandary they face.  Winners from the second round advance to the final phase which will also take place during those two days.

The UNB team advancing to the second round consists of fourth year business administration students Tristan McBride, Franz Hargo Muljo; third year business student Sebastian Ramierz, and their advisor, Prof. Gopalan Srinivasan.

The competition aims to challenge all university students at an international level.  The goal is to make a difference to organizations, communities and the world by addressing authentic and critical issues faced by many businesses today.
