Bridging the gap
Every student in UNB Fredericton's MBA program will have the opportunity to develop their personal network of business contacts during their first year of the MBA program. In the professional development course students meet experienced business people each week to explore and discuss different topics related to business and career development.
The professional development course includes workshops, experiential exercises, field trips, and exposure to business experts from a variety of disciplines and industries, all designed to give students practical knowledge to complement their classroom learning.
Build your resume
The various MBA professional development seminars and hands on projects students participate in help build the kind of resumes employers look for: applications of theoretical knowledge to real business situations, the demonstrated knowledge of what it means to be a professional, and the ability to communicate effectively.
What would you say if you only had 11 minutes to talk?
During the 2010-2011 school year students in the Professional Development program gained first hand experience and worked closely with members of the local business community and non-profit organizations by organizing a unique event. As part of a class project students conceived and organized 11 Minutes/11 Muscles, an event to create awareness of and support for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. It takes 11 muscles to talk; inspired by the short, riveting TED talks on ted.com, students challenged some of New Brunswick's most interesting people to come up on stage and say something inspiring in 11 minutes. 11 Minutes/11 Muscles took place on April 1 in Fredericton's brand new convention centre and raised over $8,500 to support clients of Muscular Dystrophy Canada in the Fredericton area. Even more, the event drew a crowd of over 280 people, which helped to broaden awareness in the community of the challenges associated with living with neural muscular disorders.
Six extraordinary people from New Brunswick participated in a series of captivating talks that ranged from local to international and even galactic issues. These included the honourable Graydon Nicholas, Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick; David Adams Richards, award winning author and playwright; Brian Duplessis, executive director of United Way; Freeman Patterson, award winning photographer and writer; Rachel Pulfer, director of international journalists for human rights; and Stanton Friedman, nuclear physicist, ufologist and original civilian investigator of the Roswell UFO incident. The entire night was filmed, so you can watch all of the 11 minute speeches by clicking here for videos of all the speakers. Click here to read more about this exciting event.
