Application to Co-op placements require a cover letter and resume. Co-op orientation workshops are held twice a year; in September and in January. As well, interview questions are reviewed so you are well prepared for your interviews.
Cover letter overview
Your cover letter should introduce you to potential employers and answer the questions what's in it for them and what's in it for you. Employers will appreciate your ability to express how they can help you explore and develop your career interests and how you fit into their organization.
Resume overview
Resume preparation can be extremely confusing as there are many opinions on this subject. The key to success is focusing on what employers typically look for to develop a list of candidates for interviews.
- The layout should be simple, professional and attractive.
- You should match your relevant skills and experience to the opportunity.
- You are clear, concise, use bullet points, short sentences making it easy to read.
- Emphasize all personal and transferable skills and not just your knowledge base.
- Focus on your accomplishments and results of what you have done not the duties and responsibilities of what.
Interview questions overview
Interviews involve solid preparation before the appointment so there are many examples of questions reviewed during the orientation session. Knowledge of the organization is key to securing a placement and most interviewers will ask the question “so what do you know about our company?” Students have lost positions because they have not done their research and are ill-prepared for the interview. Don’t show up to an interview without reviewing your answers to possible interview questions. Write your answers down so you can access this visual when asked the question. Many Co-op students comment about learning how to succeed in an interview as one of their most positive outcomes associated with completing the Co-op program. Interviewing well is a skill that takes practice so give yourself a head start and work on your interview questions.
