The course presents basic concepts of geographic information systems (GIS). In particular, students will learn how to create and edit spatial data, to work with attribute tables, to find information within a GIS data base, how to present spatial data under the form of maps. The course is based on the GIS software, ArcGIS. There are no scheduled lectures and laboratories for the course as it is fully web-based. FOR6302Advanced Optical, Thermal Infrared and Radar Remote Sensing 3 ch
This fully web-based course offers instruction in remote sensing methods for observing earth’s surface at different levels (ground, airplane, satellite). It allows the quantitative understanding of optical, thermal infrared and radar images as acquired by earth’s observation satellites like LANDSAT-TM, SPOT-HRV and NOAA-AVHRR and RADARSAT. It includes remote sensing applications in forestry, agriculture, geology oceanography, hydrology and environmental studies. It does not deal with photo-interpretation. As part of course requirements, students write a paper on remote sensing application specific to their area of research endeavor. Le cours est aussi disponible en français.
FOR6303Basics of Image Processing in Remote Sensing3 ch
This course has two concurrent flows depending on the student’s interest. The first flow for anyone with experience in digital image processing, but very little or no experience in the remote sensing theory. It has an objective to provide the required skills to understand how earth’s observation digital images are produced and what are the different types of images currently available. The second flow is designed for anyone with little or no remote sensing experience. It emphasizes learning the use of digital images through environmental applications using the Geomatica image processing software by PCI Geomatics Enterprises Inc.
FOR6304Advanced Studies in Radar Polarimetry (RADARSAT 2 –images) 3 ch
Introduction to image processing methods for RADARSAT-2 images (with a particular reference to polarimetric images). The course is fully web-based. It allows the quantitative understanding of the nature of radar images and polarimetric images and how they can be processed to extract relevant information. It includes applications in forestry, agriculture, geology, oceanography, hydrology, and environmental studies. Students will be required to complete a literature review on applications of polarimetric SAR images on their choice. They will also complete a polarimetric SAR image analysis on their choice. This web-based course offers instruction in advanced processing methods as acquired by earth’s observation satellites like LANDSAT-TM, SPOT-HRV and NOAA-AVHRR. The course includes: characteristics of digital images; image display; pre-classification processing; image correction; image classification; spatial image processing and analysis. The course does not deal with photo-interpretation. As part of course requirements, students develop an image processing application specific to their area of research endeavor.
