Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pressing public health challenge in New Brunswick, with a rate of 449 victims per 100,000 residents (Statistics Canada, 2023).

Between 2018 and 2023, police-reported IPV increased by 26.1%—nearly double the national increase. Despite the alarming trend, New Brunswick lacks an integrated provincial data structure capable of supporting coordinated early identification, intervention, and prevention.

Existing systems remain fragmented, siloed, and governed by inconsistent policies.

This fragmentation limits the province’s ability to:

  • detect high-risk patterns early
  • coordinate cross-sector intervention
  • evaluate program effectiveness
  • allocate resources equitably
  • inform evidence-based policy decisions

This forum will bring together key stakeholders — decision-makers, researchers, service providers, Indigenous partners, and community partners — to present the Institute of Population Health’s findings from its recent gap analysis and to collectively begin building a Provincial IPV Data Integration Framework.

Outcomes

The primary outcome of this event will be a series of recommendations for IPV data integration across the province, accompanied by a detailed description of the current state of IPV-related data systems. Additional objectives include:

  • Validate proposed governance and data-sharing models with cross-sector collaborators.
  • Identify practical implementation steps and partnership structures.
  • Strengthen collaboration across health, justice, social services, and community sectors.

Benefits of participation

  • Cross-Sector Collaboration: Engage with leaders from government departments, health authorities, shelters, researchers, and Indigenous stakeholders to shape a coordinated provincial approach.
  • Practical Implementation Tools: Access governance recommendations and proposed data-sharing protocols to bring back to your organization.
  • Influence Provincial Policy: Contribute your expertise to recommendations that will shape New Brunswick’s approach to IPV data governance and prevention strategy.

Strategic vision

This event represents a critical transition from research to action. Rather than concluding with a publication, this forum will build provincial consensus, incentivize shared ownership of implementation, and reduce siloed responses to IPV.

The long-term vision is to position New Brunswick as a leader in integrated IPV data governance and prevention strategy — grounded in safety, equity, and cross-sector collaboration.
