How to Get the Most Out of Counselling

Whether it’s reading a self-help book, using an app, or engaging in individual therapy, change is hard work.  It’s important to come in with an open mind and a willingness to work to make positive changes in your life. Change is an active process – your counsellor can help you understand yourself better and help you identify things you can do differently, but then it’s up to you to do the work of making changes.

At times counselling can be uncomfortable – you’ll be stretching your comfort zone and trying to let go of unhelpful ways of coping that may have been a part of you for a long time.

To get the most out of your time with your counsellor make sure you attend your appointments consistently and follow through on the work you commit to doing outside of sessions.

It’s a collaborative effort.  Providing feedback to your counsellor helps ensure that the work you’re doing together progresses in a way and at a pace that works best for you.  Let them know what’s working, and perhaps more importantly let them know what isn’t working for you in sessions or in your work outside of sessions.
