Counselling

Single-sessions are available at our Fredericton office, typically booked within the same week and require less paperwork than ongoing counselling, making it easier to get support quickly. Book a single session today by submitting a request form.

If you are interested in ongoing counselling following a single session you will need to complete a new appointment request form specifically for ongoing counselling.

Single session counselling may be helpful for addressing issues like:

  • Stress and overwhelm – support with balancing life and academic demands.
  • Anxiety or low mood – needing strategies to cope in the moment.
  • Academic concerns – trouble focusing, procrastination, test anxiety or motivation struggles.
  • Decision-making – career directions or making a tough personal choice.
  • Relationship challenges – navigating conflict with friends, roommates, family or partners.
  • Transitions – adjusting to university life, moving away from home or changes in routines.
  • Grief- significant loss.

How to decide which is right for you

Single-session counselling may be right for you if:

  • You have an immediate concern or problem in the present.
  • Your focus is on a specific issue you want to talk through.
  • You’d like practical strategies and coping skills you can use right away.
  • You just need a supportive space to check in once.
  • Not designed for crisis/emergencies or to replace ongoing counselling.

Ongoing counselling may be right for you if:

  • You’re dealing with challenges that feel ongoing or complex.
  • You’d like to explore patterns, relationships or past experiences in more depth.
  • You prefer consistent support over time.
  • You’re working on long-term goals like managing anxiety, improving coping skills or building healthier habits.

Meet our team

Fredericton | M.Ed., C.CC., LCT, Acting Director

Erin Crossland

I have had the privilege of counselling UNB and STU students at UNB Counselling Services since 2009. I love working in a campus community and appreciate the diversity of individuals within it.

University fosters a great deal of growth, resilience and change and I am grateful to help guide and support students along their university journey. In sessions I aim to provide a safe, empathic and comfortable environment for students. I bring sincerity, humour, connection, mindfulness, curiosity, goofy analogies, a background in team environments and athletics to support students and challenge them to build upon their skills and strengths.

In addition to counselling, I facilitate a variety of events through the Positive Mental Health Team. These events are fun, interactive and promote wellness, social health and community building and are open to all students on campus. I hope to see you there!

Fredericton | M.Ed., CCC, Counsellor

Mathieu Cormier

I am originally from the ever-so-distant shores of Moncton, New Brunswick, though I have called the capital region my home now for over a decade. In counselling, I tend to vary my approach between cognitive-behavioural and interpersonal techniques based on need.

I also have a very strong penchant for tenets of positive psychology and will often work to focus sessions on things like creativity, personal growth and prosocial behaviour. I am fluently bilingual and can offer counselling in both French and English on request.

Fredericton | M.Ed., CCC, LCT, Counsellor

Sarah Johnson

I am originally from the West Coast, but have called UNB “home” since 2015, and joined the Counselling Services team in 2018. I love our campus community, and find working with university students to be both rewarding and inspiring! It is an honour to witness people harnessing their inner strength and resilience in the process of personal growth, and making progress toward their goals.

In addition to individual counselling, I enjoy facilitating therapeutic groups, and believe strongly in the power of human connection as an agent of change. In my free time, I am an enthusiastic dog and cat mom, plant collector, traveler and foodie. I practice hot yoga daily, and will sing its praises to anyone who’ll listen!

Fredericton | M.SW, RSW, Counsellor

Susan Lee

I am from Saint John, N.B. and am happy to join the UNB Counselling team after working and studying in post-secondary support in Ottawa and overseas. I like to bring warmth, curiosity, humour and creative energy to my engagement with students. I believe students have deep resources of inner wisdom and strength that when drawn upon and cultivated can lead to a healthier, more meaningful and satisfying life.

Helping make the university a welcoming place for First Nations students, first-generation students and international students is something I value. I am LGBTQ+ positive and open to ways of being which may be different from mainstream societal expectations. When I’m not at UNB, I enjoy going out to see live music, walking in nature, connecting with family and friends, and crafting.

Fredericton | M.Ed., LCT, Mental Health Strategist

Matthew MacLean

As the Mental Health Strategist, I am responsible for helping UNB craft a comprehensive, multi-component and targeted plan to support student well-being and mental health across campus.

I've previously worked at UNB in the Student Accessibility Centre and spent several years at NBCC before returning to UNB for my current role. When not at work, I enjoy making experimental soups, playing complicated board and card games and practicing yoga.

Fredericton | M.Ed., LCT-C, Counsellor

Elis Mayara Nobre Moreira

I am from Brazil and worked there as a clinical psychologist for 10 years before coming to Canada in 2021 to attend UNB as an international student.

While doing my master’s in counselling, I worked on a project with QTBIPOC Students at UNB and at the Multicultural Association of Fredericton, developing presentations about diversity, inclusion and anti-racism.

As a counsellor I use a holistic view and a combination of evidence-based interventions. However, the most important thing for me is to offer a warm and safe space for students to share their concerns.

I believe that everyone is unique, and I feel honoured to walk alongside my clients on their journey to change. I provide counselling in either English or Portuguese!

Fredericton | M.Ed., LCT-C Counsellor

Rohini Sharma

Home for me has been many places—India, Africa, and now, for over two decades, Canada.

I consider my counselling approach to be client-centred, strengths-based, and diversified, to meet the unique needs of students. I hope to provide a warm, safe, and compassionate space where I can work collaboratively with students to assist them in accepting themselves, making healthy choices in all aspects of their lives, and helping them reach their full potential. I feel honoured to be part of a student’s healing journey. I can provide counselling in either English or Hindi.

In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, collecting (cool) rocks on the beach, reading, and rewatching Marvel movies!

Saint John | M.Ed, CCC, LCT, Counsellor

Trish Murray-Zelmer

I'm a former international student originally from the United States and have been living and working on Wolastoqey land since 2008.

I have had the privilege of working with university students for over 10 years. I believe in empowering students by helping them harness their strengths and values while respecting them as the experts of their own lives. I strive to provide a safe, compassionate, and trauma-informed space for each of my clients in a way that is meaningful to them. Drawing from multiple therapeutic approaches, I work with the client's expertise on what works for them to co-create a path forward for students.

When not in the office, I am often found hiking, travelling, gaming, baking, and hanging out with my rabbit.

Fredericton | Administrative Assistant

Tanya Jones

I have been with Counselling Services since 2004 and love helping students! I also love working with our team to provide the best service to students possible. In addition to helping students, I am the plant caretaker at Counselling and routinely send students home with a little baby plant of their very own.

When I’m not on the 2nd Floor of the CC Jones Student Services Centre, I can most likely be found at the local hockey arena or cuddling with my rescue Beagle, Beau.

Saint John | MSc., CCLS, Counsellor

Shira Zipursky

I am originally from Winnipeg, MB, and moved to the Maritimes over 10 years ago, which I now consider home. I have a background in psychosocial care, health, trauma, grief and loss, and have worked in healthcare, community and not for profit settings.

I enjoy delivering workshops, keynote speaking, as well as facilitating therapeutic groups on the topics of (but not limited to), mindfulness, self-care/self-compassion, stress management and coping skills, healthy boundaries, loss, and adjusting to a new normal. I strive to provide a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment that is student-goal focused whether this be through individual sessions or group programming. I believe strongly in the mind-body connection and feel treating the whole person (physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health) is very important in order to reach optimal overall health and well-being.

In my downtime I can be found at the beach, enjoying nature, and exploring the world through the eyes of a toddler. I enjoy connection and strive to live a balanced lifestyle.

Fredericton

Brett McCavour

My approach to counselling is grounded in empathy, respect, and collaboration, ensuring that each client feels valued and understood as we work together to explore their unique experiences and foster meaningful growth.

I take a holistic approach, addressing the interconnectedness of mental, emotional and physical well-being. With five years of experience working in a post-secondary setting, coupled with my background as a student and student athlete, I can relate to the challenges and pressures that university life can present.

I believe that everyone has inherent strengths and resilience, and I look forward to helping students harness these qualities to navigate their challenges and achieve their goals.

Outside of counselling you can find me on the soccer field, hiking with my dog, cuddling with my cat or spending time with friends and family.
