Meet our team

M.Ed., CCC, Director

April Kennedy

I joined the UNB Counselling Team in 2008 and while some aspects of mental health services have changed and evolved since that time, the passion I have for this work and my commitment to helping students has remained solid.

Witnessing the strength, growth and resilience of students is an honour and I hold a deep sense of gratitude for being able to do something I truly enjoy. When I’m not in the office, I can be found combing the beach for seaglass, watching the birds or enjoying a good cup of coffee.

M.Ed., CCC, Counsellor

Sherilyn Cheeks

Hey there, I'm Sherilyn, and I'm all about helping you feel your best at the University of New Brunswick! I've been on this journey of supporting people for over 30 years, and it's my absolute passion.

I didn't just start counseling yesterday; I actually began my career in the public school system. I've been there, helping students, parents, and teachers with all sorts of challenges. So, I've got a good grasp of what you might be going through at any age. We're all human, and we all need a little support from time to time.

But my adventures in the world of mental health didn't stop there. I later ventured into the private sector, where I met people from all walks of life. No matter who they were or what they faced, I was there to lend an understanding ear and a helping hand. I truly believe in the power of a growth mindset. It's all about learning new skills to enhance our lives, especially during those tough times. And, you know what, it's also about getting to know our true selves.

What's really exciting for me is working on how to see life from a positive perspective and how to keep those good vibes going every day. I'm enthusiastic about this and believe that a positive mindset can make a huge difference. It's about understanding that we can learn and grow, and this growth can help us immensely in challenging times.

When I'm not at work, I'm all about having fun. I love going for bike rides, taking nature walks, and spending the summer at my cottage. I'm also a cat lover and enjoy the company of my two furry friends. Oh, and there's nothing like sipping a nice cup of coffee while listening to some great music.

So, whether you're feeling a little overwhelmed with university life or have other life experiences cropping up, I'm here for you. Let's make your time at UNB as amazing as it can be! Remember, we all go through ups and downs, and there's always room for growth and learning. It's all a part of getting to know your true self and making your journey even more incredible.

Fredericton | Counselling Intern

Sally Clarkin

I am originally from PEI but have been lucky enough to call Fredericton my home the past few years. When I’m not in office, you can catch me playing tennis, cycling, or hammocking with a good book!

I am a compassionate and dedicated counselling intern currently in the final stages of completing my master’s in education in Counselling. With a genuine passion for helping individuals navigate their challenges, I am committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for your journey towards healing and personal development.

My approach blends cognitive-behavioural and interpersonal techniques, adapted to your needs. Drawing from diverse experiences, I understand the strength within each person and am here to help you harness it. Whether through addressing thought patterns or enhancing relationships, I tailor strategies for your unique situation.

Taking steps towards healing takes courage, and I'm honored to walk this path with you. Let's create a safe, supportive space where you can express yourself and work towards a more fulfilling life.

Fredericton | M.Ed., CCC, Counsellor

Mathieu Cormier

I am originally from the ever-so-distant shores of Moncton, New Brunswick, though I have called the capital region my home now for over a decade. In counselling, I tend to vary my approach between cognitive-behavioural and interpersonal techniques based on need.

I also have a very strong penchant for tenets of positive psychology and will often work to focus sessions on things like creativity, personal growth and prosocial behaviour. I am fluently bilingual and can offer counselling in both French and English on request.

Fredericton | M.Ed., CCC, Counsellor

Erin Crossland

I have had the privilege of counselling UNB & STU students at UNB Counselling Services since 2009. I love working in a campus community and the diversity of individuals within it. University fosters a great deal of growth, resilience and change and I am grateful to help guide, support and validate students along their university journey. In sessions I aim to provide a safe, empathic and comfortable environment for students. I bring kindness, sincerity, humour, connection, mindfulness, curiosity, goofy analogies, and my background in team environments & athletics to support students and challenge them to build upon their skills and strengths.

When I am not working with students in my comfy purple office chairs, I can be found around campus promoting the UNB Campus Wellness activities & initiatives. In my free time, I can be found cheering from the sidelines at many of the Reds games, travelling or at a park, hiking trail or waterfall with my family! I also won’t ever be too far from a good cup of tea, plate of nachos or anything dill pickle flavoured!

Fredericton | M.Ed., CCC, Counsellor

Kate Gates

I have worked in post-secondary institutions for over 20 years and have always believed that the learning which takes place outside the classroom is an important part of the experience. So much life change and personal growth can occur during the span of a degree program, and it is a privilege to have the opportunity to work with students at all stages of this experience.

My counselling approach is client-centered and eclectic, as I draw on multiple theoretical orientations and techniques. My hope is that when a student walks into my office they will experience a safe space where they can explore any aspect of their emotional well-being.

M.Ed., CCC, Counsellor

Sarah Johnson

I am originally from the West Coast, but have called UNB “home” since 2015, and joined the Counselling Services team in 2018. I love our campus community, and find working with university students to be both rewarding and inspiring! It is an honour to witness people harnessing their inner strength and resilience in the process of personal growth, and making progress toward their goals.

In addition to individual counselling, I enjoy facilitating therapeutic groups, and believe strongly in the power of human connection as an agent of change. In my free time, I am an enthusiastic dog and cat mom, plant collector, traveler and foodie. I practice hot yoga daily, and will sing its praises to anyone who’ll listen!

Fredericton | Counselling Intern

Chamel Khoury

I am very grateful to be joining the UNB Counselling Services team this year as an intern.

I approach counselling with the view that people are fundamentally good and doing the best they can, and that problems emerge when we struggle to meet our diverse needs as inherently bio-psycho-social-spiritual creatures.  I believe that self-discovery and insight are conducive to personal growth, especially when coupled to modalities based on acceptance and compassion. Above all, my most sincere aspiration is to provide a setting where students feel recognized, accepted, and validated for their humanity.

When I am not spending time with my beloved family, you might find me gardening, immersed in nature, or running the beautiful Fredericton-area trails.

Fredericton | M.SW, RSW, Counsellor

Susan Lee

I am from Saint John, N.B. and am happy to join the UNB Counselling team after working and studying in post-secondary support in Ottawa and overseas. I like to bring warmth, curiosity, humour and creative energy to my engagement with students. I believe students have deep resources of inner wisdom and strength that when drawn upon and cultivated can lead to a healthier, more meaningful and satisfying life.

Helping make the university a welcoming place for First Nations students, first-generation students and international students is something I value. I am LGBTQ+ positive and open to ways of being which may be different from mainstream societal expectations. When I’m not at UNB, I enjoy going out to see live music, walking in nature, connecting with family and friends, and crafting.

Fredericton | M.Ed., LCT, Mental Health Strategist

Matthew MacLean

As the Mental Health Strategist, I am responsible for helping UNB craft a comprehensive, multi-component and targeted plan to support student well-being and mental health across campus. I've previously worked at UNB in the Student Accessibility Centre and spent several years at NBCC before returning to UNB for my current role. When not at work, I enjoy making experimental soups, playing complicated board and card games and practicing yoga.

Fredericton | Counselling Intern

Jasmine Michel

I come to this role as a counselling intern with an eagerness to connect with students and to learn! I believe firmly that we all have nobility and strength inside of us, and important stories to tell, and in counselling I strive to create a safe environment in which we can explore these things creatively and collaboratively.

My background is in music therapy, a modality I hope to integrate into my counselling practice. I am also drawn to counselling approaches that acknowledge the whole person: physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, and in the context of our communities.

Whether in work or in play I always love to get creative, and these days my play looks like making music with friends, sewing,  collaging, and pointing enthusiastically at things while on walks in the forest.

Fredericton | M.Ed., LCT-C, Counsellor

Elis Mayara Nobre Moreira

I am from Brazil and worked there as a clinical psychologist for 10 years before coming to Canada in 2021 to attend UNB as an international student.

While doing my master’s in counselling, I worked on a project with QTBIPOC Students at UNB and at the Multicultural Association of Fredericton, developing presentations about diversity, inclusion and anti-racism.

As a counsellor I use a holistic view and a combination of evidence-based interventions. However, the most important thing for me is to offer a warm and safe space for students to share their concerns.

I believe that everyone is unique, and I feel honoured to walk alongside my clients on their journey to change. I provide counselling in either English or Portuguese!

Saint John | M.Ed, CCC, LCT, Counsellor & Campus Sexual Assault Support Advocate

Trish Murray-Zelmer

I'm a former international student originally from the United States and have been living and working on Wolastoqey land since 2008.

I have had the privilege of working with university students for over 10 years. I believe in empowering students by helping them harness their strengths and values while respecting them as the experts of their own lives. I strive to provide a safe, compassionate, and trauma-informed space for each of my clients in a way that is meaningful to them. Drawing from multiple therapeutic approaches, I work with the client's expertise on what works for them to co-create a path forward for students.

When not in the office, I am often found hiking, travelling, gaming, baking, and hanging out with my rabbit.

Fredericton | Counselling Intern

Rohini Sharma

Home for me has been many places—India, Africa, and now, for over two decades, Canada.

I consider my counselling approach to be client-centred, strengths-based, and diversified, to meet the unique needs of students. I hope to provide a warm, safe, and compassionate space where I can work collaboratively with students to assist them in accepting themselves, making healthy choices in all aspects of their lives, and helping them reach their full potential. I feel honoured to be part of a student’s healing journey. I can provide counselling in either English or Hindi.

In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, collecting (cool) rocks on the beach, reading, and rewatching Marvel movies!

Fredericton | Administrative Assistant

Tanya Jones

I have been with Counselling Services since 2004 and love helping students! I also love working with our team to provide the best service to students possible. In addition to helping students, I am the plant caretaker at Counselling and routinely send students home with a little baby plant of their very own.

When I’m not on the 2nd Floor of the CC Jones Student Services Centre, I can most likely be found at the local hockey arena or cuddling with my rescue Beagle, Beau.
