Project Delivery Principles

Young professionals

Traditional project management primarily focused on the balance of constraints: scope, cost and schedule.

While we still need a solid understanding of such basics, project management has become more complex, reflected in the new focus on delivery principles shown version seven of PMI’s Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide v7).

This course focuses on project delivery principles as defined in the new PMBOK® Guide, including having a value focus, tailoring, complexity, agility, sustainability, stewardship, holistic thinking, adaptability and resilience. The course will also cover PMI’s shift from process groups to performance domains.

Learning objectives

You will gain practical skills to:

  • Develop an appreciation for the importance of "soft skills" such as leadership, stewardship,  holistic thinking, and adaptability and resilience
  • Change the paradigm from being focussed on tools and techniques toward an emphasis on project delivery principles
  • Acquire a nuanced understanding of the role of the Project Manager
  • Become aware of the changes in Version 7 of the PMBOK® Guide
  • Appreciate the value of a strategic and holistic approach to project management

Who should participate?

This course is appropriate for individuals who are:

  • Working on projects in any industry who want to increase their PM knowledge
Project managers, project coordinators, subject matter experts, technical personnel, team members, managers, and key support personnel
  • Those preparing for the PMP® or CAPM® designation or those who already hold these designations but who want to understand the changes that PMI has made in the new PMBoK Guide®
  • Those who want to increase their marketability in the project management job market

Instructor

Janice Petley has over 20 years of project management experience. Her typical assignments are definitely project management, but are anything but "typical". Her experience spans a wide range of projects: from classical theatre at the Stratford Festival and symphony concerts in the United States, to stadium and arena opera productions in cities such as Tokyo, Munich, and Brussels. Whether it was a large sporting event at the Rogers Centre or an opera with a cast of 1000 in a bull ring in Madrid, Janice has worked on high risk, innovative, challenging projects. As many of her events were broadcast live-to-air both nationally and internationally, she fully understands the necessity of flawless project execution.

Janice has extensive experience with projects whose core deliverables focused on marketing, corporate communications, employee rewards, team building, and training and education. She has managed projects for many high profile corporate clients including CIBC, Chrysler Canada, Telus, and BMW. The not-for-profit client list includes the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Canada Games, and Special Olympics International.

She holds a BA from the University of Western Ontario, a BEd from Queen’s University, an MBA, and is designated as a Project Management Professional and a Certified Agile Project Manager.
