A quiet legacy of generosity

Phil Mavor's (BA'49) story is a powerful reminder that anyone can leave a meaningful legacy.

Phil's connection to UNB began long before he set foot on campus as a student. The university was a constant backdrop to his young life, throughout a childhood spent just down the hill in Fredericton. Though he went on to live quietly and give modestly during his lifetime, his decision to include UNB in his estate planning has created lasting opportunities for students, now and in the future.

Phil was remembered by his fellow students for his quiet intelligence. After graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in 1949, he had a long teaching career in high schools throughout southern Ontario. His summers were spent at a cottage he'd built himself, or on the lake in a homemade boat. He was passionate about gardening and music – he could often be found sitting in his living room, surrounded by his extensive record collection.

Over the decades, Phil gave regularly to UNB. He didn't seek recognition or fanfare; his support was consistent, thoughtful and steadfast.

In his final years, Phil made the decision to formalize his appreciation for UNB through a bequest. The commitment to education he had upheld throughout his teaching career continues, with the establishment after his death of the Philip Mavor Scholarships.

These scholarships – four awards per year valued at $10,000 each – are already making a tremendous difference in the lives of deserving students.

Phil's story invites alumni of all backgrounds to consider the impact they might have by including UNB in their estate planning.

By following Phil's example, you can leave a meaningful mark on your alma mater – ensuring future students benefit from a UNB education for decades to come.
