Donation helps deepen UNB's community impact

When Fiona Green (Lamont) thinks about the University of New Brunswick, her mind floods with memories of her undergraduate years and the Maritime hospitality she experienced while on campus.UNB Fredericton Dean of Arts Jim Murray, UNB President Eddy Campbell, Psychology Department chair Sandra Byers, Fiona Green, Jim Green, UNB Vice-President (Advancement) Bob Skillen, and Psychological Wellness Centre executive director Jean Craven.

The alumna (BA ’68) now lives in Toronto, but the distance hasn’t dampened her love of the institution.

“When I look at the university now, I can’t help but marvel at how much it has grown and how far it has come since I attended,” Fiona said. “I’m proud it’s my alma mater. It’s just what a 21st Century university should be.”

UNB’s impact on the community

Fiona said she admires the many centres of excellence at UNB. From the Pond-Deshpande Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and the Canadian Rivers Institute, to the Gregg Centre for the Study of War and Society, and the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, UNB is making a difference in the broader community by sharing its knowledge and know-how.

It’s that kind of community mindedness that inspired Fiona and her husband Jim to get involved in UNB’s new Psychological Wellness Centre (PWC).

Fiona and Jim donated $100,000 to the centre. Jim and his partners at CGOV Asset Management donated an additional $10,000 through the CGOV Foundation. Their contributions, with a $750,000 commitment from the R. Howard Webster Foundation, helped make the centre a reality.

“We not only liked how the centre would benefit students from the psychology department, but appreciated that it would also benefit community members,” Fiona said. “When Jim and I think about places or programs to contribute to financially, one of our requirements is that it be something that also benefits the community.”

Deepening the Impact

The University of New Brunswick’s strategic plan reflects a desire to not only build a better university, but also a better province.

Through the combined efforts of the university’s researchers, faculty, staff, alumni and donors, UNB has established more than 60 research centres, institutes, groups and major projects.

“UNB makes it a priority to share our knowledge and expertise with the broader community,” said UNB President Eddy Campbell. “The Psychological Wellness Centre, for example, will provide care to children and adolescents, will offer training to the next generation of clinical psychologists, and will conduct valuable research that could impact the community, the region and beyond.

“Deepening our community impact is a goal – and responsibility – that we take very seriously. And I’m very proud to say it’s something we’re making great strides toward at UNB.”
