Currie Scholars, 2012 Winners

Dr. Richard J. Currie, UNB's fifth Chancellor.The Currie Scholarships at the University of New Brunswick, were established by Dr. Richard J. Currie, UNB's fifth Chancellor and a Canadian business icon. Valued at $50,000 over four years, the Currie Scholarships are awarded to students who are recognized as some of Canada's most promising young scholars.

Tyler Young, Jaclynn Beckett, Jordie Taylor and Megan Smith display qualities of leadership and academic excellence resulting in their selection as the Currie Scholarship recipients for the 2012-2013 year at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton and Saint John.

Tyler Young, from Rexton, New Brunswick, is in the bachelor of science program at UNB Fredericton. In addition to his high academic standing, Young was the captain of
his high school basketball team, played on several sports teams, and was a member of student council as treasurer.

Jaclynn Beckett, from Saint John, New Brunswick, is in the bachelor of nursing program at UNB Saint John. In addition to her high academic excellence, Beckett was president of her grad class executive, captain of her high school basketball team, andJaclynn Beckett, from Saint John, N.B., is a bachelor of nursing student at UNB Saint John. She graduated from Harbour View High School. helped tutor her fellow students.

The Red Rapids, New Brunswick, native Jordie Taylor is in the bachelor of science in engineering program at UNB Fredericton. Alongside his high academic standing, Taylor captained his high school soccer team, and took part in his senior class as a member of the grad class committee. Taylor volunteered at the Western Valley Regional Games and as a Lifeguard.Jordie Taylor of Red Rapids, N.B., is a bachelor of science in engineering student at UNB Fredericton. He graduated from Southern Victoria High School.

Megan Smith, from Cornwall, Prince Edward Island, is in UNB's bachelor of arts and bachelor of science concurrent program. In addition to her grades, Smith led her anti-bullying team as a peer facilitator, was editor of her high school yearbook, and a journalist for her school newspaper.

With heavy involvement in their high school and community, as well as demonstrating leadership skills and highTyler Young of Rexton, N.B., is a bachelor of science student at UNB Fredericton. Tyler graduated from Bonar Law Memorial High School. academic standing, Young, Beckett, Taylor and Smith earned themselves the prestigious Currie award.

Dr. Currie’s generosity has helped many students achieve their goal of attending and graduating from university. He is an officer of the Order of Canada and a laureate of the Canadian Business Hall of Fame. He is also the major donor and creative force behind the state-of-the-artMegan Smith, from Cornwall, P.E.I., is studying in the bachelor of arts and bachelor of science concurrent program. She graduated from Bluefield High School. CURRIE CENTER on UNB’s Fredericton campus.
