About Dr. Anthony (Tony) Secco

Dr. Anthony (Tony) Secco, vice-president (academic).

Dr. Secco is a native of Nova Scotia, receiving his BSc (Honours) from St. Francis Xavier University. He earned his PhD in Chemistry from the University of British Columbia and was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania.

He spent over twenty years at the University of Manitoba as a Professor and later as Associate Head in the Department of Chemistry and then Associate Dean and Dean of their Faculty of Graduate Studies.

He came to UNB from Cape Breton University where he served as Vice-President (Academic and Research). His extensive administrative experience has also included several Senate and Board of Governors’ terms and work with MPHEC Quality Assurance.

During his academic career he has been recognized for his outstanding teaching, including the University of Manitoba Students’ Union and University Teaching Services Students’ Teacher Award. He was also the inaugural recipient of their University Teaching Services/U1 Teaching Award.

His research work has been in the area of small molecule crystallography and structural studies of novel DNA fragments.

Within his current position as Vice-President Fredericton at UNB, Dr. Secco is responsible for the academic portfolio as well as several campus services.  He is a member of the Maritime Higher Education Commission and also serves on both its Finance and the Academic Advisory Committees. He is a tenured Professor in the Department of Chemistry.
