Temporary Disabilities/Injuries

The Student Accessibility Centre can offer assistance to students with temporary disabilities, injuries or recovering from surgery. Please contact the SAC if your condition becomes ongoing.

What to do if you have a temporary condition and will be missing class:

Please contact the Student Advocate.

What can the Accessibility Centre do for me?

We can assist you with any exam writing accommodations that may be needed, use of a computer, separate location (if you are unable to physically access the room/building).

We may be able to provide you with a digital voice recorder to assist with taking lecture notes. Photocopying notes is available to you at the Centre.

Suggestions to cope with a temporary disability:

  1. Give yourself plenty of time between classes if your temporary disability impedes mobility.
  2. Depending on the extent of your injuries/disability you may need to consider taking a lighter course load until you have fully recuperated.
  3. Ask friends and family to assist in any way possible.
  4. Speak to your instructor and let them know the challenges you are facing. An open dialog in the beginning can make a huge difference if things become hectic.
  5. Ask friends or the SAC to locate a note taker for your classes. We supply special note taking paper allowing you to get your notes immediately after class.
  6. Discuss class attendance with your doctor so you will be better prepared for the possibility of missed classes and tests.
  7. Borrow a manual wheelchair from the Canadian Red Cross 780 413 4990 or call Shoppers Drug Mart to discuss a rental.
  8. Use SafeRide or SafeWalk service when available.
