 UNB-F Student Accessibility Centre Guidelines for Confidentiality

  1. Disability related information is to be treated as medical information. Any information regarding your disability is considered confidential and will be shared with others within the institution on a need-to-know basis only.

  2.  To protect confidentiality by assuring limited access, all disability-related information must be filed securely with the SAC. Information in files will not be released except in accordance with federal and provincial laws.  Exceptions arising from Canadian law include:

    • If a professional member of staff has a reasonable suspicion that a child (presently under the age of sixteen) has been or is being physically, sexually or emotionally abused or neglected.
    • If a student presents as a serious danger of violence to others or is likely to harm himself or herself unless protective measures are taken.
    • If a student reveals that he or she has been sexually abused by a healthcare provider who is practicing under the scope of the Regulated Health Professions Act. This report may result in the disclosure of confidential information.
    • Emergency situations such as medical crises
  3. You may give written authorization for the release of information when you wish to share information from your file with others. The SAC may, at times, ask you to read and sign a Release of Information form. This release gives us permission, if necessary, to request any additional medical and/or psychological information pertaining to your current functional limitations for the purpose of determining Disability Services eligibility and planning appropriate accommodations.

  4. Your file may be released pursuant to a court order or subpoena.

  5. You may give written authorization for the release of information when you wish to share information from your file with others.

  6. The SAC may, at times, ask you to read and sign a Release of Information form. This release gives us permission, if necessary, to request any additional medical and/or psychological information pertaining to your current functional limitations for the purpose of determining Disability Services eligibility and planning appropriate accommodations.

  7. You have the right to review your file, however, you must make an appointment to do so.
