Support Services Available from A-Z

Accommodations

Accommodations are strategies, technologies or adjustments that enable a student to reach prescribed course outcomes and requirements. Accommodations do not modify or lower academic standards. Frequently recommended accommodations include:

  • Reduced course load
  • Extra-time for assignments
  • Extra-time for test/examinations
  • Separate or quiet location
  • Note taking support
  • Memory Aids
  • Scribes
  • Readers
  • Assistive technology

Advisement

SAC staff advises students on various issues related to university life. Staff refer students to the appropriate on and off campus contacts or services, when appropriate.  SAC staff are not professional counsellors.  Students who require counselling are referred to UNB Counselling Services (453-6376).

Advocacy

SAC liaises with UNB offices, faculty and staff (such as registrar, deans, professors, residential services, funding agencies, library staff, and technical services) and community service providers to ensure that student concerns or needs are addressed.

Alternate Formats 

SAC provides assistance obtaining digital textbooks(e-texts) or course packs for reading with computer software. Students are able to have print materials scanned into electronic/digitized format at the Harriet Irving Library Assistive Technology Centre.

Assessments

The UNB Student Accessibility Centre does not provide assessment services. Students who require assessments are referred to private service providers or, in certain limited circumstances, to the UNB Psychological Wellness Centre for psycho-educational assessment.

Funding

SAC assists students with their applications for Canada Study Grants . Students are referred to Financial Aid (453-4796) for other financial aid options.

Mentoring

Students recommended for the Successful Transition to Employment Program (STEP), are matched with a mentor to assist with  transition to university life and career/employment.  STEP is a flagship program of the Student Accessibility Centre.

Note Taking Support

SAC arranges appropriate note taking support such as: assistive technology solutions, volunteer or paid note takers. Students may also be referred to the Writing anf Study Skills Centre to learn how to take good notes. Contact WSSC at 452-6346 or by email at wss@unb.ca

Scanning

The Harriet Irving Library Assistive Technology Centre is equipped with scanners that can be used for digitizing course outlines and journal articles. Visit go.lib.unb.ca/access for more information.

STEP

Students may be referred to the Successful Transition to Employment Program (STEP). STEP helps students improve their personal, academic, and employability skills through a mentor/mentee relationship. STEP is a flagship program of the Student Accessibility Centre

Temporary Accommodations Due to Illness or Injury

The Student Accessibility Centre provides accommodations to students with temporary disabilities, injuries or recovering from surgery. Students are referred to the Student Advocate if they are missing class time due to their temporary disability.

Test and Exam Accommodations

Students must be pre-approved for test and examination accommodations, such as:

  • Quite Room
  • Extra Time
  • Use of Computer
  • Reader service or text-to-voice software
  • Scribe service or voice to text software

Time Management and Organization Help

Students may be referred to the STEP program to help develop time management and organizational skills. Students may also be referred to Student Success Series workshops and/or the Writing and Study Skills Centre.

Writing Assistance and Proofreading
