English Language Programme

Program of Academic English Preparation Pathway (PAEP)

The Program of Academic English Preparation (PAEP) is the University of New Brunswick Fredericton’s pathway designed to prepare you for the successful completion of your undergraduate degree program. If you are an academically admissible student to select programs on UNB's Fredericton campus and do not meet the full English language requirements for undergraduate entrance, you are a candidate for PAEP Pathway.

As a PAEP Pathway student, you will be placed into one of these three categories:

IELTS 6.0
or equivalent
1 Term
EAP + 2 academic courses
Full Academic
IELTS 5.5
or equivalent
2 Terms
Term 1: EAP + 1 academic course
Term 2: EAP + 2 academic courses
Full Academic
IELTS below 5.5
or equivalent
3 to 4 Terms
EAP
Students may be eligible to enroll in academic courses in term 2 or 3
Full Academic

Please note:

  • Students arriving without an English proficiency score (IELTS, TOEFL, etc.) can be tested upon arrival.
  • In order to proceed to the next term in Pathway, students must maintain a B average (75%) in their English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses.

Program benefits

Full-time language studies incorporate class hours, assignments, tutorials, and advising involving 35+ hours a week. As a PAEP Pathway student, you are a full-time UNB student and will benefit from:

  • Weekly academic advising
  • Access to the use of technology and sports facilities
  • Eligibility for UNB’s entrance scholarships and residence accommodations

Dates

Course dates follow UNB's calendar of academic dates. Classes commence in September, January, and May.

Costs

UNB's full-time undergraduate tuition fees apply.
