Gowns

The University rents black long-sleeved gowns for bachelor’s and master’s graduates and solid red gowns for PhD recipients. The official gown descriptions, as set out in the University Calendar are:

  • Undergraduate: Plain black stuff material, sleeveless
  • Bachelor': stuff falling below the knee, with sleeve reaching to the wrist and terminating in a point
  • Master's: Black silk or stuff gown, falling below knee, with long sleeves with semi-circular cut bottom
  • Doctor's: A scarlet cloth robe, faced with dark blue silk, the same colour as the lining of the hood

Hoods

  • BA:  Black stuff bordered with white fur
  • B.A.Sc.:  Black stuff bordered with white fur and scarlet braid
  • BAA:  Black stuff lined with ivory bordered with white fur
  • LLB:  Pale blue bordered with white fur
  • B.Sc.:  Black stuff lined with scarlet bordered with white fur
  • BMLS:  Black stuff lined with teal bordered with white fur
  • B.Sc.(Applied)*:  Black stuff lined with green bordered with white fur
  • BBA:  Black stuff lined with light brown bordered with white fur
  • B.Kin.:  Black stuff lined with claret bordered with white fur
  • B.Sc.Kin.:  Black stuff lined with claret bordered with white fur and dark green braid
  • BRSS:  Black stuff lined with claret bordered with white fur and navy braid
  • BN:  Black stuff lined with peach bordered with white fur
  • BCS:  Black stuff lined with green bordered with white fur
  • B.Ed.:  Black stuff lined with grey bordered with white fur
  • B.Phil.:  Black stuff lined with dark blue bordered with white fur
  • BIS:  Black stuff lined with gold bordered with white fur
  • MA:  Black silk lined with crimson
  • M.Phil.:  Black silk lined with white bordered with dark blue
  • M.Sc.:  Black silk lined with white bordered with scarlet
  • M.Sc.(Applied)†:  Black silk lined with white bordered with green
  • MCS:  Black silk lined with white bordered with green
  • M.Ed.:  Black silk lined with blue grey bordered with crimson

  • PhD:  Scarlet cloth with dark blue silk lining
  • LLD:  Scarlet cloth with pale pink silk lining
  • D.Sc.:  Scarlet cloth with white corded silk lining
  • DCL:  Scarlet cloth with pale blue silk lining
  • D.Litt.:  Scarlet cloth with grey silk lining

Note: The proper way for graduates to wear their hoods is with the colour turned out on the left shoulder. The proper way to wear caps: tassel on the left side before graduation and tassel on the right side after graduation. Graduates may keep the souvenir caps they receive with their gown rental and they have the option of not wearing a cap. Members of the military and the RCMP may wear academic dress over their dress uniform.
