A passion for travel is what spurred Patricia Hanley to investigate UNB’s Student Abroad Program, but a love for learning is what made her final decision.
The Student Abroad Program in Saint John and Fredericton provides the opportunity to study abroad for one or two school terms in places such as Australia, Japan, Denmark, Singapore, France, Mexico, USA, Germany, Sweden, Hong Kong, and the UK. Pre-approved university courses taken at the host institution are credited towards a UNB degree and are covered through regular UNB tuition fees.
Studying in a different country offers an opportunity to meet students from all over the world, enhance language skills and provides an introduction to different cultures all while earning credits towards a degree.
Since September Patricia Hanley, a third-year biology student in Saint John, has been studying at the Université de Poitiers in France and will follow it up with an additional term at James Cook University in Australia during the winter months to focus on marine sciences.
"My semester in France was amazing," says Hanley. "I made really good life long friends and contacts around the world. My French got 10 times better and I can't wait until I get a chance to go back and visit."
"I heard about the Student Abroad Program and was really interested," says Hanley. "It has really become a great way for me to make the most of my undergraduate career."
"I'm planning on getting a first-hand look at the Great Barrier Reef while I'm there." With a year of studies remaining upon her return to UNB Saint John, Hanley is considering taking a marine semester at St. Andrews before she graduates. Like other students qualifying to study abroad, Patricia was fortunate to receive funding through a scholarship from Scotiabank.
Academically students can take courses not offered at UNB, giving them a competitive advantage upon graduation.
"In today's global economy, cross-cultural competence and cultural adaptability are in high demand, particularly when employers make decisions about hiring and promotions," explains Ase Kelly Berg, International Program Advisor at UNB Saint John.
Another option available through the Student Abroad Program is the North American Mobility Project.
Jonathan Cogger, a current UNB student, recently completed an academic internship in Washington, DC, this past summer working in a finance company.
"It was a phenomenal experience," says Cogger. "I networked with many individuals and had a chance to lobby on Capitol Hill for Human Rights on behalf of torture victims."
"Overall I went to DC to step out of my comfort zone to explore what the world has to offer."
