University of New Brunswick Saint John students and volunteers collected over 100 coats during the recent Coats for Kids campaign.

Brad Trecartin, UNB Saint John Student Volunteer Unit president and second year business student, is pleased with the response from the community.

“People really pulled through,” he says. “Coats were dropped off at boxes on campus and collected by students and volunteers during the annual Saint John Santa Claus parade. “

“The show of support we received from the students, faculty, volunteers and the community was tremendous,” Robert

MacKinnon, UNB's vice-president (Saint John).  "At UNB, we are proud of our students

who clearly demonstrated their community spirit by taking the initiative to help support this important program."

The coats were delivered to New System Laundry & Cleaners Ltd. where they were cleaned and then distributed by the Saint John Boys & Girls Club to children throughout the Saint John community.

Collection warms volunteers hearts

Winter can be hard on many due to the drop in temperature and the sheer amount of snow that falls.  With the speed that children grow it can be difficult for parents, or caregivers, to keep up with the clothing that is required to keep them warm.

“It’s a good feeling being able to give back to the community,” says Trecartin.  “Keeping kids warm during the cold winter months is definitely a worthwhile initiative.”

The UNB Student Volunteer Unit is a group of more than 40 students who assist with a variety of community outreach initiatives as well as supporting events taking place on campus. This is the first year for the club on campus.
