Enrollment and exams

Course enrollment

Students are responsible for registering themselves into courses, through their personal e-services.

Instructors are responsible for confirming that students have the appropriate pre-requisites to be in their courses or to grant the student permission to continue in the course if they do not meet pre-requisite requirements. Instructors may contact the Office of the Registrar to drop a student from their course for non-attendance or for lack of pre-requisites within the add/drop period.

The Office of the Registrar organizes the exam schedule for Fall, Winter and Summer terms, according to the exam formats scheduled by instructors.

Instructors must notify students of the type of exam which will be scheduled, preferably within the first two weeks of the course. For further details, please review Examinations and Evaluation of Course Work in the UNB Calendar.

Once determined, instructors may notify the Office of the Registrar of the exam format, and special requirements (i.e. rooms, dates) through one of the following options:

  • Submit a completed Exam Schedule Request Form, distributed among academic units within the first three weeks of classes.
  • Submit a departmental listing of each section's exam format.
  • Email the Office of the Registrar

The Office of the Registrar will use exam scheduling software to compare the exam schedule requests of students and instructors, and UNB exam regulations and procedures, to produce the most efficient and balanced exam schedule possible. Once a tentative schedule has been produced it will be released online and in personal e-services exam schedules. Approximately one week will be allowed for changes to be made based on errors, scheduling issues, and exam conflicts. After the exam schedule is confirmed, no changes will be permitted.

Unless otherwise noted, all exams will be written in the G. Forbes Elliott Athletics Centre gym for Fall and Winter exams; all Summer exams will be located in classrooms. Exam booklets will be provided in the gym, and to departments for exams written in classrooms. Exam times and locations for students with disabilities will be organized by Student Services based on the main exam schedule.

The Faculty is responsible for the invigilation of exams. The Office of the Registrar hires graduate level students to assist in the invigilation of exams in the gym. Their role is to assist the instructors and may include the following tasks:

  • Distribution and collection of exam papers and tools
  • Attendance
  • Accompanying a student to the washroom
  • Notifying an instructor of suspicious behaviour

Deferred exams

Students wishing to defer exams based on medical or compassionate grounds may apply at the Office of the Registrar. The Office of the Registrar will contact the instructor if a deferred exam has been approved. In emergency cases during the exam period, an email or phone call to the office will be sufficient to begin the process.
