Information on the No 32 Ordnance Ammunition Depot from the UNB Gregg Centre's New Brunswick Military Heritage Project

Street Address: 6534 NB-8, Ludlow, NB

This facility was opened in 1942 as the No 1 Magazine Company, a detachment of No 7 Ordnance Depot located in Saint John.  It was a third line ammunition depot consisting of twenty-four storage bunkers operated by the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps. It remained in operation after the Second World War, with permanent marriage quarters being added in the 1950’s. It underwent a number of names changes but finally was called the No 32 Ordnance Ammunition Depot. With the unification of the Canadian Armed Forces it was declared redundant and closed in 1969.  The property was sold. The bunkers still exist, along with some of the marriage quarters. Until recently, the camp chapel was a Baptist church and the Sergeant’s Mess was relocated to become the South Portage Recreation Center. It has since been demolished. Standing forlornly by the overgrown baseball field is a cairn that was raised to celebrate Canada’s Centennial Year.
