As part of Lieutenant Governor John Harvey's defence plan during the Maine/New Brunswick border dispute, a British military post was established in 1839 at the mouth of the Aroostook River, blocking the road to Fort Fairfield. It consisted of the Grenadier Company of the 36th Regiment with a strength of 80 men, reinforced with 50 militiamen and a six pounder canon.
