Grand Falls WWI German Artillery Gun

Street Address: 126 Boulevard Broadway, Grand-Sault, NB

On display in the green space in the center of the road is a German 77 mm field artillery gun, number 8283. It was captured during the Battle of Arras by the 25th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces at the Moon Quarry, near Cherisy, France. Along with New Brunswick’s 26th Battalion, the 25th Battalion from Nova Scotia, were part of the 5th Infantry Brigade, 2nd Canadian Division. On the 27 August 1918, the brigade attacked against strong German resistance, but succeeded in capturing the town of Cherisy and storming across the River Sensee. During this action, this artillery piece was captured. This trophy from the Great War has been on display in several locations in Grand Falls since its arrival in 1929, but the current site is appropriate, as it is in front of the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.
