Nursing Homes Without Walls for Aging in Place in Rural New Brunswick

Lead organization: Université de Moncton

Principle investigator(s): Dr Suzanne Dupuis-Blanchard

About the project:

The issue

Most older adults want to stay in their home for as long as possible, but it is sometimes hard to get services. Even though some services are available, some older adults and their families don’t know they exist or how to get them. Plus, living in a community far away from the city can add to the difficulty of finding services.

The importance

Not receiving services at home when in need can mean that older adults will not be able to stay in their home. Without proper support, older adults may need to go to the hospital for care or to a nursing home before it is time. That will cost more than having services at home.

What makes this project different

The local nursing home in four rural communities will provide support and offer information on existing services to older adults who want to stay in their home.

Anticipated impacts

First, we anticipate that older adults and their families will receive the services and support that they need to stay in their home. We also anticipate that the four communities in the project will become aware of the needs of older adults by becoming age-friendly communities. And last, we anticipate that nursing homes in the province can provide services to older adults living in the community to support aging at home.
