Do you use Google Chrome on your computer or mobile device?

World-wide security vulnerabilities have recently been discovered in Chrome that could put your devices at risk (further details below).

To protect your devices and data, please make sure your Chrome browser is up to date with the latest security patches. To do this:

Mac/Windows:

  1. Within Chrome, click the three vertical dots in the top right hand corner of the window.
  2. Click ‘Update Google Chrome’. If you don’t see this option, your browser is already up-to-date (Chrome normally updates in the background when you close and reopen your browser).

Android:

  1. Open the Google Play store.
  2. Open the side menu by pressing the icon in the top left corner.
  3. Tap on ‘My apps & games’.
  4. Scroll down if needed, find the Chrome app, and tap on ‘Update’.

iPhone:

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. At the bottom, tap ‘Updates’.
  3. In the pending updates, look for Chrome.
  4. If Chrome is listed, tap ‘Update’ to install.
  5. If asked, enter your Apple ID password. The updates will download and install.

About the vulnerabilities

Known as the Google Chrome Zero-Day Exploit, these security vulnerabilities may be used by cybercriminals to take control of affected devices. For full details, please see the recent article from forbes.com.

Tips to protect your devices from security threats

  • Always keep your devices, apps and browsers up to date. Updates often contain security patches that will protect you from the latest cybersecurity vulnerabilities and threats.
  • Set your mobile device to automatically install updates as they become available (contact the IT Service Desk if you need help).
