Elizabeth Weir

Elizabeth is the founding President and CEO of Efficiency NB, a New Brunswick Crown Corporation created in 2005. Efficiency NB is a national leader in delivering comprehensive, award-winning energy efficiency programs and services for individuals, businesses and industry. It recently received the Alliance to Save Energy’s prestigious International Star award.

Prior to her appointment, Elizabeth Weir served for over 14 years as a member of the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly, representing the constituency of Saint John Harbour.  As provincial leader of the New Democratic Party, she was also the first woman leader elected to the Legislative Assembly and the first elected leader of the New Democratic Party.

Elizabeth Weir also has extensive experience in training parliamentarians and working on international democracy development projects both as a speaker and a trainer in Nepal, Mozambique, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Macedonia, Niger, Romania, Senegal, Morocco, Cambodia and Nepal.  She was the recipient of the 2008 Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year Award these international efforts.

In May 2005, Ms. Weir was awarded an Honourary Doctor of Laws Degree by the University of New Brunswick for her “advocacy of causes of vital international importance on behalf of the province, the nation and the international community”.

Elizabeth Weir received her Honours Degree in Sociology from the University of Waterloo and her law degree from the University of Western Ontario.
