YOUR FOCUS:

 

 

 

Research Legal Counsel ("Counsel") is responsible to provide privileged legal advice to the Vice-President (Research) (VPR), Office of Research Services (ORS), and their respective staff, and to draft, negotiate and facilitate research agreements. Counsel provides and manages the legal portfolio associated with the broad range of research activities of UNB. They will advise, educate and consult with faculty, management, ORS staff, and others at the University regarding legal protocols and legal questions and advice regarding research related contracts, research related intellectual property issues, and export control issues.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

WHAT YOU BRING:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Law.
  • 3 to 5 years as a member in good standing of the Law Society of New Brunswick (or equivalent provincial association).
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in contract drafting and negotiation of agreements, working with academia or industry or an equivalent combination thereof.

 


Additional Strengths

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • Education/training in business law, contracts and commercial law, legal risks and intellectual property law, and/or equivalent experience. Ideally also include experience in export control and research ethics or an expectation to learn it.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the legal risk associated with the commercialization relationships and agreements in the academic research environment is required.
  • Excellent knowledge of the laws of NB and Canada particularly as it relates to corporate, commercial, contract and intellectual property law.
  • Drafting and reviewing of research agreements and commercial contracts; and demonstrable understanding and experience of research administration is an asset.

The Office of Research Services (ORS), within the Office of the Vice-President Research (OVPR) and under the direction of the Executive Director, ORS, provides pre-awards, post-awards, partnership development, intellectual property (IP) & agreements management, technology and knowledge transfer, commercialization and legal advice and support services to faculty, staff, and students on the Fredericton and Saint John campuses.

 

 

 

This position is part of the non-union Administrative, Professional and Technical (APT) group.
