The University of New Brunswick Saint John welcomes applications for the position of Biological Sciences Technician with the Department of Biological Sciences. This position is a part-time (18 hours per week), term ending August 18, 2023, with the CUPE employee group. The position is funded by the University Budget with a salary range of $23.07 - $29.11 per hour.
The primary role of a Biological Sciences Technician is to support undergraduate labs taught in the department, with emphasis on Biology and Chemistry.

Position Summary:
- Preparing teaching labs.
- Reviewing lab procedures with the lab instructor and making any necessary modifications.
- Checking and maintaining inventory of chemicals, specimens, and equipment required for each lab.
- Arranging required safety documents and transportation for off-campus excursions.
- Preparing chemical solutions and media. When necessary, collecting or preparing specimens.
- Providing necessary hardware and equipment. Cleaning used hardware such as equipment and glassware.
- Making chemical waste generated in undergraduate labs safe for disposal.
- Inventorying and organizing materials for undergraduate teaching labs.
- Tracking expenditures related to undergraduate course labs.
- Operating, maintaining, and calibrating equipment.
- Maintaining living bacterial cultures, and plants. Maintaining and coordinating use of holding spaces.
- Maintaining living invertebrates, and vertebrates to Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) standards.
- Maintaining and coordinating use of the animal holding spaces for teaching purposes.
- Providing technical advice and assistance to faculty, staff, undergraduate students, and graduate students.
- Overseeing purchase and inventories of ethyl alcohol used for research and teaching purposes.
- Attending departmental meetings to provide updates and input pertaining to undergraduate teaching labs.
- Enhancing the student experience by; applying for funding and purchasing of new equipment for teaching, developing new undergraduate lab activities, providing demonstrations/experiences for visiting student groups.
- Other duties as assigned by the Chair.
Requirements/Skills:
- BSc in Biology, Chemistry, or Environmental Science with 3 years of experience working in a laboratory setting.
- Background in Biology and Chemistry.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office programs.
- Flexibility with hours (after 5:30pm).
- Must possess excellent communication, organizational and teamwork skills.
- Should be able to work independently, and to recognize and initiate tasks necessary to the department’s function without supervision.
- Ability to adapt to unscheduled requests for assistance would be an asset.
- Willingness to acquire and maintain First Aid training. Familiarity with WHMIS/GHS would be considered and asset.
