The University of New Brunswick Fredericton welcomes applications for the position of Technical Officer with the Department of Chemistry. This is a continuing, full-time (36.25 hours per week) position with a salary range of $52,725 - $68,544 per annum.
Reporting to the Chair, Department of Chemistry, the Technical Officer shares responsibility for the general operation of the Science Technical shop and has the requisite expertise for diagnosing and repairing major scientific instrumentation, and for designing and producing new laboratory equipment and electronic circuitry.
Position Summary:
- Maintain, service, and repair all scientific instrumentation used for undergraduate teaching and research activities.
- Troubleshoot problems on major scientific instrumentation and obviate expensive service contracts via in-house repair.
- Calibrate, test, and evaluate the performance of standard and complex instruments.
- Assist the NMR operator with routine liquid helium fills.
- Provide technical advice and assistance as required by Faculty members.
- Conceive, design, and construct laboratory instrumentation for teaching and research laboratories including items requiring the design of electrical and electronic circuitry.
- Construct metal, plastic, and other components using the shop's machining equipment.
- Design electronic circuits via CAD, print to circuit boards, and fabricate.
- Administer and manage the general operation of the electronics shop.
- Manage the allocated budget and prepare inter-departmental workshop charge backs.
- Order supplies and equipment and maintain inventories of supplies and equipment.
- Maintain a list/database of suppliers of electronic parts and equipment.
- Coordinate daily activities with the Technician - Chemistry, agreeing on assignment of duties and responsibilities as appropriate.
- Provide mentoring to the Technician - Chemistry, as appropriate.
- Design and construct laboratory instrumentation for outside clientele.
- Participate in and manage any external contracts.
Requirements/Skills:
- Electrical engineer with a BScE from an accredited programme.
- Experience in instrument repair, electronic circuit design, and printed circuit board design and fabrication.
- Experience with computers and computer software is a necessity.
- Experience in sheet metal design and fabrication, metal lathing, and silver soldering highly recommended.
- Ability to comply with UNB risk management and safety protocols.
- Demonstrated managerial and supervisory skills or potential.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with a range of individuals, from undergraduate students to faculty members to external users.
- Physically able to meet the job requirements and demands and navigate the layout of the building.
