The University of New Brunswick Fredericton welcomes applications for the position of Registered Nurse with UNB Student Health Centre. This is a renewable, full-time (36.25 hours per week) position with the APT employee group. The position is funded by the University Budget with a salary range as per NBBU rates of $36.82 - $44.77 per hour.
Reporting to the Team Lead Nurse, the Clinical Nurse functions in an expanded role for nurses that is appropriate for triage, treatment, and follow-up as per medical directives, with or without a physician on site. The Nurse is usually the first health care provider that students see.
Position summary:
- Initial and ongoing assessment and evaluation of patients to identify appropriate nursing interventions.
- Collaborate with members of the interdisciplinary health team to plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate patient care.
- Monitor, assess, address, document, and report symptoms and changes in patients' conditions and response to interventions.
- Provide emotional support and chaperoning during MD/NP appointments.
- Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to identify and assess patients.
- Assess and interpret patient information to determine interest and ability to participate in their care.
- Administer medications, treatments, and procedures as prescribed by practitioners, or established policies and protocols.
- Prepare patients for their appointment, record patients' medical histories and symptoms, and provide testing.
- Perform phlebotomy, wound care, and ear syringing.
- Assist MD or NP during minor surgery and procedures.
- Establish/maintain therapeutic relationships, a supportive environment for communication, and excellent bedside manner.
- Operate or monitor medical apparatus or equipment safely.
- Advocate for and support patient's rights and well-being.
- Demonstrate the ability to provide effective direction and oversee workload.
- Provide counseling that assists patients in developing, improving and regaining skills, promoting health and recovering from illness, and disability.
- Sort, review, and distribute lab results to appropriate practitioners and arrange follow up as needed.
- Process samples, label specimens, and ensure safe delivery to lab as per standards of transportation of dangerous goods.
- Independently assess students for the broad spectrum of conditions and medical interventions.
- Plan, participate in, and support the University's response to emerging health, public health and pandemic- related issues.
Requirements/Skills:
- Registered Nursing certification required; Bachelor of Nursing preferred.
- At least five years' experience working within emergency, family practice, or similar environments with student-age populations.
- Demonstrate an ability to work effectively with the late adolescent/young adult populations and be cognizant that this stage of development is unique with special issues and concerns.
- Demonstrate computer literacy and strong typing skills, in particular working with electronic medical records and troubleshooting issues that may arise.
- Demonstrate reflective thinking, assessing alternatives and supporting change.
- Certification and skill in venipunctures.
- Active membership in good standing with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick.
- Current certification in BCLS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods.
