The University of New Brunswick Fredericton welcomes applications for the position of Library Assistant PL3 with UNB Libraries. This is a part-time (variable hours per week), 1-year term position. The position is funded by the University Budget with a salary range of $18.65 - $22.30 per hour.
Reporting to the Head of Reference and Circulation Services, the Library Assistant PL3 is responsible for providing supportive student-centered frontline service, primarily during evening and weekend shifts from September through April. Hours of work will vary and may include working until closing. The incumbent may be required to provide service at any of the three library locations on the Fredericton campus.
Position summary:
- Provide exemplary customer service to an academically and culturally diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and members of the public who use the library.
- Navigate the library catalogue and the library circulation system with accuracy and discretion.
- Handle financial matters such as payment of fines.
- Address security issues, referring more serious problems to Campus Security and appropriate library personnel.
- Sort and shelve library items as required. May be required to assist with collections-based projects. Shelf read sections of the library stacks. Search for missing items.
- Answer directional and basic reference questions related to library holdings and policies, referring more complex research questions appropriately.
- Assist in supervision of library student assistants.
- Provide service at any of the three library locations on the Fredericton campus, and assist with opening and closing the library, as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements/Skills:
- An undergraduate degree, or relevant combination of course work and experience. Expertise searching library catalogues, databases, and other library resources.
- Demonstrated experience providing service, preferably in an academic environment. Must have the interpersonal skills to deal with faculty, staff, student, colleagues, and other library patrons with tact, discretion, and courtesy.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with accuracy and careful attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively both as a team member and independently.
- Physical stamina for lifting, standing, and bending.
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends. Supervisory experience is an asset.
