The University of New Brunswick Fredericton welcomes applications for the position of Library Assistant PL4 with UNB Libraries. This is a continuing, full-time (36.25 hours per week) position with the SALAC employee group. The position is funded by the University Budget with a salary range of $20.45 - $23.75 per hour.
Reporting to the Head of Reference & Circulation Services, this position supports a variety of activities required for the operation of Circulation Services within UNB Libraries. This position will work as part of a team to ensure excellent service and smooth functioning of front-line services within the UNB Libraries system.
Hours of work may include evenings and weekends and may be required to work at any of the three UNBF Libraries.
Position summary:
- Provide exemplary public service to all library users, in-person, by telephone, and by email.
- Staff the Circulation Desk for a minimum of 15 hours a week. Circulate library materials, process fine payments, answer directional questions, and refer people to appropriate service.
- Ensure stacks maintenance through regular shelving and shelf-reading, reporting areas of concern to the Coordinator of Circulation Services.
- Assist with opening and closing procedures.
- Provide tier 2 reference services, which includes answering basic reference questions related to library holdings, resources, and policies, referring more complex research questions appropriately.
- Assist with special projects such as collections withdrawals, including working with library records.
- Participate in departmental meetings as required.
- Troubleshoot computer and/or student copying, printing, and scanning, issues, referring more complex issues to technical support as required.
- Assist other units with projects as time permits, including helping to maintain reserves collection through coordination with the Document and Digital Delivery Unit.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements/Skills:
- University degree supplemented by at least 2 years' experience in a public service area of an academic library, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Demonstrated excellent public service orientation. Must have the interpersonal skills to deal with faculty, staff, students, colleagues, and other library patrons with tact, discretion, and courtesy.
- Demonstrated ability to deal with stressful service situations calmly and effectively.
- Ability to work effectively in an online environment including demonstrated expertise with electronic library resources and services, and desktop applications.
- Willingness to contribute positively to ongoing improvement of library service.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team and with careful attention to detail.
- Physical stamina for lifting, standing, and bending.
