The University of New Brunswick Saint John welcomes applications for the position of Mental Health Nurse with Student Services. This is a 1-year term, full-time (29 hours per week) position with the MED employee group. The position is funded by external monies with a salary range as per the New Brunswick Nurses Union rates.
Under the general direction of, and reporting to, the Nurse Practitioner, the Mental Health Nurse provides nursing care and support for students at UNBSJ through direct nursing assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation. The Mental Health Nurse is responsible for triaging students presenting with a variety of mental health concerns, offering one on one support, group support and educational presentations. The Mental Health Nurse will advocate on behalf of students and identify appropriate interventions that promote a greater level of wellbeing for individuals and the campus.
Position summary:
- Provide supportive evidence-based counselling such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, strength-based coaching, motivational interviewing and suicide assessment and intervention.
- Perform within the defined scope of practice in accordance with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick.
- Conduct mental health assessments.
- Develop individualized treatment plans.
- Monitor medications for therapeutic responses and provide client education on medications including purpose, proper administration, intended effects and side effects if necessary.
- Monitor student progress and evaluate treatment plans.
- Provide brief interventions to students in acute distress during regular work hours and ensure that students, staff, and faculty are aware of after-hour crisis lines and support systems.
- Provide support and increase awareness around mental health for students, staff and faculty as needed.
- Participate and consult with inter-disciplinary team colleagues related to individual clinical care when required.
- Participate in programs/projects that increase the awareness of mental health services.
- Work collaboratively with other team members.
Requirements/Skills:
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. Master's in nursing is an asset. Certificate in Mental Health Nursing or CNA certification
- Minimum of 3 years recent and direct Mental Health experience
- Knowledge of psychiatric illness and diagnosis in the DSM-V.
- Active Registration with Nurses Association of New Brunswick
- Current Basic Life Support, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
- Basic Addictions Knowledge
- Motivational Interviewing
- Demonstrated awareness of the Mental Health Act, Social Development protocols and NB Addiction withdrawal protocols.
- Excellent written and spoken communication and organizational skills.
