The University of New Brunswick Saint John welcomes applications for the position of Library Assistant PL4 with UNB Libraries. This is a continuing, full-time (36.25 hours per week) position with the CUPE employee group. The position is funded by the University Budget with a salary range of $18.42 - $22.64 per hour.
Under the direction of the Library Services Desk Manager, the Library Assistant PL4 is responsible for serving library patrons at the Library Services Desk, contributing to UNB Libraries' digital collections by digitizing print and other materials, and assisting with technical services operations.
Position summary:
- Provide friendly, welcoming service at the Desk in person, by telephone, and by email to all students and other visitors to the Hans W. Klohn Commons; services include, but are not limited to: circulating library materials, providing basic research help as appropriate, assisting with printing/scanning/copying and basic IT needs, providing directions and general information, and referring people to appropriate service points in the Commons and throughout the campus
- When scheduled, open and close the Hans W. Klohn Commons.
- Ensure book stacks are maintained in good order by shelving, shifting, and shelf-reading as necessary.
- Use the large format printer to print posters requested by students, faculty, and staff and manage billing for this service.
- Accept payments for overdue fines, lost books, document deliveries, printing, etc.
- Help to ensure confidentiality of borrower records.
- Create digital assets from print material collections while adhering to specialized procedures.
- Maintain project status records.
- Record ongoing procedures and outcomes with the aim of improving workflow and results.
- Liaise with UNB Libraries' Manager, Digital Imaging as required for training, troubleshooting, etc.
- Supervise and train other support staff as needed.
- Assist with technical services operations, such as acquisitions, document delivery, and basic cataloguing.
- Serve on campus and bi-campus committees and projects as assigned.
- Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as required.
Requirements/Skills:
- An undergraduate university degree or library technician diploma. 6 months' experience working in public service in a library setting.
- Experience working directly with University students would be an asset.
- Familiarity with handling of sensitive or archival materials.
- Basic experience with scanning and editing software, as well as working within a networked environment.
- Demonstrated reliability. Adaptable and flexible.
- Strong public services orientation and skills in addressing needs with discretion, patience, and courtesy.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Strong computer technology and digital literacy skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as with a team. High attention to detail.
- Standing, lifting, walking, bending is required.
- Must be able to adjust schedule seasonally and to work some evenings and weekends.
