The University of New Brunswick Fredericton welcomes applications for the position of Scientific Research Technician with the Department of Physics. This is a term (until March 31, 2023), full-time (36.25 hours per week) position with a salary range of $51,609 - $67,941 per annum.
The Scientific Research Technician is responsible for the ongoing development and management of the remote data collection, retrieval, storage and distribution through CHAIN. This role involves constant daily monitoring of equipment at numerous remote field sites, local inhouse servers not at ITS, data integrity on mirror servers as part of our disaster recovery plan, automated data retrieval and processing algorithms, developing and maintaining the ftp database for the growing 100 terabytes of near-real-time data available, and troubleshooting remote field sites outages.
Position summary:
- Participate in our partner - UNB scientific forums as a technical data resource.
- Build custom code needed for security and rights management required by contracts and integrate into web service code on CHAIN servers. Configure and schedule external routines that need to run on CHAIN servers.
- Direct development/ maintenance of in-house software for interpretation of data.
- Lead ongoing maintenance of CHAIN servers. Quality assurance for in-house, client-facing, and third-party software.
- Develop autonomous CHAIN data acquisition, distribution, and scalable archiving system at UNB.
- Work with Students in furthering their studies/ research in regards to access and usability of data resources.
- Providing local expertise to team members on the High Performance Computing System (Compute Canada).
- Software design and development in multiple languages (i.e. IDL, Matlab, C, BASH, SQLITE).
- Provide analysis and technical solutions for feature requests and bug fixes.
- Advise on and maintaining a technology vision and plan for the CHAIN research program for all deployment strategies.
- Responsible for software licenses held for software installed on CHAIN systems.
- Manage the CHAIN Web Server & Web Site.
- Real-time site mapping and verification of site status. Reporting on and maintain data access for authorized users.
- Managing the CHAIN Data Server for file transfers. Maintaining daily/ weekly/ monthly data logs.
- Transfer of data between servers and archival backups. Verification of backup integrity quarterly).
- Deployment of equipment to remote locations within budgetary constraints.
- Provide consultation on the overall design and strategy of in-house and client-facing software.
Requirements/Skills:
- A minimum Bachelor's degree in Physics, Math-Computer Science or Computer Engineering with at least 3 to 5 years of experience working in a multiple server environment with remote sensing datasets. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered; however, it is important that applicants identify how the qualifications are met through specific relevant work experience and educational information.
- A valid Reliability Status approved by the Canadian Industrial Security Directorate/ Public Works and Government Services Canada (CISD/PWGSC), or eligible to obtain one for this position.
- Demonstrated effective time management, ability to travel to remote arctic locations, flexibility with working hours including an ability to work overtime on occasion to meet deliverable deadlines may be required.
- Ability to interact and communicate with a diverse group of clients; awareness & sensitivity to cultural difference is a must.
- Experience with Linux operating system preferable; strong knowledge of web-based applications web interface development and web servers is considered an asset.
- Previous education and/ or training in project management workflows including KPIs would be an asset.
