The University of New Brunswick Saint John welcomes applications for the position of Research Support Technician PL7 with the Department of Biological Sciences. This is a continuing full-time (36.25 hours per week) position with the CUPE employee group. The position is funded by the University Budget with a salary range of $22.60 - $28.96 per hour.
The Research Support Technician (RST) will report directly to the Chair of Biological Sciences, and work closely with the Director of Animal Care and with all Faculty and Research members to determine research needs. The RST is responsible for providing a complete range of technical support service
Position summary:
- Design, assemble, maintenance and repair of equipment and systems.
- Perform basic maintenance and repairs to a variety of highly complex scientific instruments, technical laboratory equipment, aquatic systems, and small marine vessels.
- Provide on-going assistance and support with diagnosis, repair, and computer interfacing equipment.
- Perform other duties on a regular basis to ensure that faculty member projects are in compliance with operating standards.
- Advise and assist the Director of Animal Care in dealing with controls and sensors, plumbing, lighting, air supply, heating/cooling, mechanical, electrical and structural systems in the faculty member's labs.
- Ensure research projects and equipment comply with and meet University guidelines.
- Train and assist faculty, staff and students with the use of laboratory equipment.
- Oversee researchers and their graduate students to ensure compliance with WorkSafeNB practices.
- Ensure safety and security in the workshop area with regard to the wide range of manufacturing equipment and power tools necessary for the purpose of constructing and testing their apparatus designs.
- Maintenance of the dechlorination system will be carried in liason with the Animal Care Technician and the Director of Animal Care on a preset schedule or when required.
- Change activated carbon and/or gravel in the dechlorinators, backwash dechlorinators, chlorine testing and calibration/maintenance of chlorine testing equipment, change/maintain the bag filter system, and check pressure gauges.
- Ensure adequate levels of seawater are maintained in the 100,000 liter storage tanks, for use by the faculty researchers.
- Check the seawater pressure gauge and seawater pumps are operational; monitor and record water levels for research billing purposes, and coordinate the coastal pickup and delivery of salt water with the Animal Care Technician.
- Provide on-going assistance and support to faculty members in the operation of special facilities.
- Maintain and support utilities, including propane, low pressure air, heating and cooling systems specific to laboratories and control systems within laboratory boundaries.
Requirements/Skills:
- Community College or equivalent, in a related field. A minimum of 5 years' experience in relevant areas. Combination of professional training and related work experience will be considered.
- Extensive background in one or more of the following: Electrical Engineering Technology, Computer Programming Technology, and Electronics/Instrumentation Technology.
- Knowledge of the safe use of chemicals and products and WHMIS training.
- Ability to work closely with people at all levels within the university, and external contractors and suppliers, with a minimum of supervision.
- Ability to adapt to unscheduled requests for assistance.
- Able to obtain certifications and qualifications as required and be willing to upgrade skills.
- Experience with water handling and water system maintenance would be an important asset.
