The University of New Brunswick Fredericton welcomes applications for the position of Judicial and Policy Officer with the University Secretariat. This is a term ending April 30, 2022, full-time (36.25 hours per week) position with the APT employee group. The position is funded by the University Budget.
The Judicial and Policy Officer, reporting to and under the direction of the University Secretary, will operate all aspects of the student academic and non-academic disciplinary and appeals process administered through the Secretariat. They will coordinate disciplinary hearings, maintain disciplinary records and oversee the selection and training of judicial bodies.
The incumbent will guide students through the relevant academic and non-academic judicial systems, ensuring all decision-making processes are procedurally fair and follow best practices, maintain accurate and reliable records for reporting and statistical needs, and provide guidance and training on administrative tribunal processes to the University community.

Position summary:
- Review, update and develop policies, procedures, templates and regulations related to student academic appeals and other academic regulations providing support to relevant Senate committees.
- Identify problems and trends, conduct research, consult with various stakeholders and develop solutions.
- Keep abreast of Canadian best practices.
- Liaise with the Registrars and others to provide procedural advice to appeal bodies in advance, during and after hearings.
- Identify procedural challenges during the appeal/hearing process, advise the University Secretary.
- Administer processes for student sexual assault complaints and other student non-academic disciplinary processes including student disciplinary code and Board of Dean processes.
- Develop and present workshops to members of the University community regarding discipline and appeals processes.
- Interpret and apply University regulations, policies and procedures, affecting student academic appeals.
- Act as a resource for the University in the area of student academic and non-academic appeals.
- Maintain a student conduct database and track trends in infractions to provide accurate records.
- Administer policy and procedures to ensure regular review of University policies, update as needed, provide advice on policy development, maintain a policy repository, and review policy framework, identify gaps and seek solutions.
Requirements/Skills:
- Law degree (with eligibility to practice law in New Brunswick) or Master's degree.
- 5 years of experience in regulatory or litigation, strong mediation and negotiating skills, excellent judgement and ability to address issues by developing practical solutions to mitigate risk.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Skills in conflict/dispute resolution.
- Ability to maintain a calm, professional manner.
- Discretion and ability to handle confidential and sensitive material using well developed judgement skills.
- General knowledge of University policies and procedures related to student judicial systems is an asset.
