The University of New Brunswick Fredericton welcomes applications for the position of Gardener Tractor Operator with Capital Planning & Operations. This is a continuing full-time (40 hours per week) position with the GLTA employee group. The position is funded by the University Budget with a salary of $21.39 per hour.
Reporting to the Operations Foreperson, the Gardener-Tractor Operator is primarily responsible for performing landscape and grounds maintenance on all University owned properties associated with the Fredericton campus, with a focus on plant and tree care. Overseeing the work of labourers and students assigned to assist in these duties, they perform a team leader function on occasion
Position summary:
- Plant and maintain flower and shrub beds including annuals and perennial plants.
- Plant, prune and remove trees.
- Provide input and assist with planning landscape projects.
- Perform lawn maintenance activities such as mowing, whipping, aerating, sod replacement, watering.
- Assist with winter snow and ice control. Plow and sand roadways, walkways, parking lots and other areas as directed using vehicles equipped with buckets, blades, and blowers.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements/Skills:
- Diploma in Horticulture, specifically in selection, planting, pruning, soils and fertilization of plants and shrubs. 3-5 years' experience in Horticulture and Landscaping.
- Must possess Class 5 driver's license as issued by the N.B. Motor Vehicle Act with endorsement for air brake vehicles.
- Must have extensive knowledge of plant cultivation and soil conditioning.
- Must be familiar with safe practices as identified by the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
- Knowledge of Arboriculture, specifically selection, planting, pruning, and removal of trees, considered an asset.
- Applicants will be tested on their ability to operate: 4x4 wheel loader, backhoe, Trackless MT, 3 ton trucks and tractors with either bucket or plow blade attachments.
- Effective written, verbal and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability and experience operating chainsaws is required.
- Must be willing and able to work overtime as required. A telephone is necessary for call-outs in the event of inclement weather and emergencies.
