Applications are invited for the position of Assistant Professor at the Dr. J. Herbert Smith Centre for Technology Management & Entrepreneurship in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Fredericton Campus of the University of New Brunswick (UNB). It is a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor and is subject to budgetary approval.

The Dr. J. Herbert Smith Centre was established in 1988 to provide leadership in engineering management and entrepreneurship. The programs delivered within the Centre have expanded considerably, increasing student numbers to an average of 600 per year, growing the enrollment capacity by 200. The Centre has served as the catalyst for 183 start-up companies from 2016 - 2022 and students within the JHSC programs have won several prestigious Business Plan Competitions.

The successful candidates will be expected to work towards developing a strong externally funded research group along with supervising graduate students, teaching in the areas of data analytics, AI, IoT, ML, and/or mechatronics, and contributing to academic service. They will be responsible for the creation and delivery of two courses a semester, totaling 4 per year which welcome engineers, scientists, and students from other disciplines. They will also liaise with other departments and faculties at UNB, and work with public and private sector organizations. This role involves working closely with students from a variety of educational backgrounds, and work experience, and who are ethnically diverse - 90% of our students are international. The successful candidate will be expected to foster a collaborative and welcoming spirit, providing a positive learning environment for all. As the J Herbert Smith Centre is a technology entrepreneurship Centre, the candidate should also be prepared to engage with multiple early-stage student-led technology start-ups. Assisting them in developing real-time AI and ML solutions, where applicable, to help advance the undergraduate and graduate student ventures.

The University is seeking an individual who possesses a unique blend of academic qualifications, leadership abilities, and professional experience. Candidates will have a PhD in engineering, or an equivalent discipline, with specialization in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Mechatronics, Software, Systems, and be eligible to register as a Professional Engineer in the Province of New Brunswick. It is recommended that candidates have supplemented their education with broad management experience in industry or government. They should bring to this position a network of contacts in the private and public sectors, along with strong communication skills.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to present their research, deliver a teaching presentation to faculty, students, and staff, and be interviewed by the Search Committee, which will be conducted in person, at UNB's Fredericton campus. Determination of a candidate's suitability for the position will be determined by the Committee's assessment and faculty, staff, and student feedback of their presentations, the interview, and the results of reference checks.

Short-listed candidates will be required to provide satisfactory proof of credentials including appropriately certified translations of credentials into English, as applicable.
