The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of New Brunswick invites applicants for a tenure-track Research Chair position in the field of Additive Manufacturing with specialization in one or more of the following areas: Materials and Process Control, Alloy Development and Powder Production, Functional, Smart, and Novel Materials, Industry 4.0, Artificial Intelligence in Design for Additive Manufacturing, or In-situ Characterization of AM Materials from Atomistic to Macro-scale. The position is associated with the Marine Additive Manufacturing Centre of Excellence located within the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
In partnership with defense and shipbuilding industry practitioners and public owners, the University of New Brunswick has established the Marine Additive Manufacturing Centre of Excellence and is hiring a Research Chair to help transform the Additive Manufacturing industry by developing new alloys for the industry, designing new additive manufacturing processes, and certifying additive parts. The appointment is expected to be at the rank of Assistant Professor starting July 01, 2022, or as soon thereafter as possible. Review of applications will begin April 14, 2022 and continue until the position is filled. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.
The successful candidate will be an internationally prominent or emerging researcher and leader for the advancement of Additive Manufacturing technologies. As Chair, they will be expected to lead an independent research program and secure funds to support that program. They will spend the majority of their time directly engaged in scientific research and teaching for the advancement of the Marine Additive Manufacturing Centre of Excellence. The Chair will be appointed in the Mechanical Engineering Department with duties including teaching undergraduate courses in the core Mechanical Engineering curriculum and in the area of the appointee's research specialty at the senior undergraduate and graduate level. This position will require supervision of graduate students and other researchers, interacting with industry partners, promoting Additive Manufacturing, and identifying industrial national and international research opportunities. Given the above the candidate should demonstrate in their application qualifications for leading and working within a team of researchers that include significant industry linkages. As this position is also an academic appointment, qualifications demonstrating the ability to transfer knowledge in classroom environments, develop new classroom material and inspire scholarship is also essential.
The appointee must have completed an earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field. Demonstrated design experience will be considered an asset and the appointee must be eligible and willing to become a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of New Brunswick.
