The Department of History at the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton) invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the history of Canada, with a preference for a specialist in Environmental history and/or Indigenous history, to commence July 1, 2020, subject to final budgetary approval. This scholar will consider the history of Canada from the broad perspective of human and non-human interaction with the land, water, and ecological environments. Applicants with expertise in Indigenous histories, Indigenous-settler relations, and/or in the history of the environment through land-based knowledges up to the 20th century are particularly encouraged to apply. The Department also encourages applicants whose geographic concentration focuses on territories of the Wabanaki Confederacy/Atlantic Canada.
The successful candidate will join a small but dynamic department of excellent teachers and researchers, and should be prepared to support its undergraduate and graduate programs in Canadian history, with existing expertise in the histories of Black Canada, Indigenous-settler relations, gender studies, the social history of medicine, and social and political history. They will have the opportunity to be part of a long-established centre of excellence in the history of Atlantic Canada with a Tier I Canada Research Chair. There will also be opportunities to be involved in the editorial work of the journal, Acadiensis.
Candidates should have completed a Ph.D. in History, or a relevant field such as Indigenous Studies, Canadian Studies, or Environmental Studies, by the date of appointment (1 July 2020) and show clear promise of excellence in both teaching and research.
