Function

Counselling is a component of Student Services and currently consists of two full-time counselling therapists, supported by external and internal partners, who offer a range of counselling services to the students of UNB Saint John, Saint John College and DMNB. They are members of the Student Services team and are committed to a student-centered service. The Mental Health Counsellor will offer primarily personal counselling and career counselling based on a short-term care model.
Representative Responsibilities
·    Develop therapeutic interventions for students, especially for those issues that affect learning and academic performance.
·    Provide emergency, crisis intervention services after working hours as necessary.
·    Develop outreach programming to campus community to raise awareness of mental health and mental health literacy.
·    Liaise with other campus professionals and community agencies.
·    Maintain confidential records of activities.
·    Provide career counselling to individual students and groups.
·    Administer a variety of career development related assessments; develop and distribute career resources as needed.
·    Provide training for faculty and staff groups as appropriate, including Residence Life, Orientation leaders, bystander training, mental health, etc.
·    Provide timely response to emails, booking appointments, returning phone calls and submitting web page content.
·    Provide consultation and support to faculty and staff about student concerns as appropriate.
·    Participate on university committees and groups as appropriate in support of students and the university.
·    Consult, support, and work with other faculty and staff on campus priority projects.
·    Participate as a member of the Student Services team on special projects and events.
·    Patriciate as a member of UNB working groups and committees as assigned.
·    Participate in case management with other Student Services professionals. Ensure a holistic approach to student support beyond mental health needs (ex. Financial Aid support, Health Centre support, Accessibility, etc.) in connecting students with other services.
·    Provide unscheduled, ‘drop-in’ support to students in crisis in addition to regular counselling.
Requirements
·    Undergraduate or graduate degree in a related field. Certification in various therapies is an asset.
·    Minimum 5 years’ experience in a counselling environment; experience with students or young adults, experience in and proven knowledge of, career development and career counselling.
·    Experience in a post-secondary setting is an asset.
·    Must be regulated or licensed with a professional body (ex. ASWNB, CCTNB, CPNB, NANB, etc.)
·    Must have extensive training and experience in mental health delivery and intervention.
