Wiktor Askanas   2007 Distinguished Service Award Recipient

Wiktor Askanas has had an outstanding career at UNB, in every conceivable dimension of performance.

On the teaching front, he has taught an amazing array of courses over the years, ranging from introductory management for undergraduates, through to organization design, to our very highest level courses such as strategy, management information systems, project management, and integrative studies—the capstone courses of our MBA program. There are probably few faculty members at any university that have covered such a wide range of topics in courses. What makes Wiktor truly unique and deserving of recognition is that he has done everything exceptionally well. His teaching abilities have been recognized to the point where he has received every teaching award possible for a business professor in Canada: UNB’s Stuart Award, a 3M Fellowship; and the National Post’s Leaders in Management Education Award.

Wiktor has also been a prolific writer, having authored over 80 books, cases, monographs, journal articles, conference proceedings papers and conference presentation papers. This total is further augmented by a number of invited conference presentations and lectures. Similar to his teaching record, his scholarly work has spanned an incredible array of topics, from early writings on developing computer networks, to strategy, management information systems, then later on teaching effectiveness and corporate governance. Again, his expertise has been widely recognized, as evidenced by the large number of invited addresses he has delivered. Some of these have been to the very top associations in business education, including AACSB (North America’s premier association of business schools), and CEEMAN (the Central and Eastern European counterpart to AACSB).

On top of all of this, Wiktor’s service to the University, the community, and to his native country of Poland has also been exemplary. Within the Faculty of Business Administration, Wiktor has held every important administrative position, including Assistant Dean (Undergraduate), Assistant Dean (Graduate Programs), and even a recent year as Acting Dean of the Faculty. He has also served on numerous committees within the Faculty and the University. His community service record is also strong, including a number of board directorships in New Brunswick, as well as in Poland. Less obvious from his CV is that Wiktor was a key contact in developing our MBA programs in Poland and Ukraine. The Faculty of Business Administration would be a much lesser place had Wiktor not been such an active faculty member here.

It is also noteworthy that Poland has recognized Wiktor’s outstanding contributions to management education there, by awarding him the Government of Poland’s Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit—the Polish equivalent of the Order of Canada.

For all of his accomplishments, UNB is proud to present Dr. Wiktor Askanas with the Distinguished Service award.
