Paris, Experience the "City of Light"

This is your chance to live in France and to appreciate, study and explore the literature, history, art, cinema, politics, and society of Paris. You will spend three weeks in Paris with some excursions in the French countryside. Classes will be held in museums, churches, cinemas, restaurants and sidewalk cafés, and in important sites related to French cinema, literature, politics and history.

* Many of these visits are exceptional and require special permissions that are only granted to the UNB France program.

In Paris, we will go to legendary landmarks (Notre-Dame cathedral, the Champs-Élysées, the Latin Quarter, the musée d’Orsay, Montmartre, and so many more world renowned sites) including a full day in Versailles, and have many exceptional visits (allowed only under special permission to UNB). In the past, we have been able to visit the Sorbonne University, UNESCO, the Canadian Embassy, the Canadian Cultural Centre, the Bank of France, the Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint), the National Assembly, the French Senate, Sainte-Genevieve library (one of the oldest in France), the Comédie-Française, the salon Goncourt in the Drouant restaurant, the Grand Rex movie palace, the Hôtel de la Païva and the National Library of France. We have also had a nocturnal visit of the Louvre, a Parisian fashion show, a banquet in a renowned restaurant, a night cruise on the Seine River, a tour of the Fragonard perfume factory and of the boutiques that made Paris famous: Chanel, Vuitton, Dior.

Come and visit the Louvre, follow the steps of the characters in The Da Vinci Code, search for Quasimodo in the belfry of Notre-Dame Cathedral, see where the French Revolution started and where the guillotine ended the life of Marie-Antoinette, admire the monuments of Louis XIV and Napoleon, climb the Eiffel Tower, sit where Hemingway wrote The Sun Also Rises and drank with Scott Fitzgerald and Henry Miller, play chess in the café in Montparnasse where Lenin and Trotsky waited for the Russian Revolution to start, walk through Picasso's studio, pay your respects to rock star Jim Morrison (of The Doors) at his final resting place and create your own enduring myths!

You might be thinking: “Hey, I can do this by myself.” Guess again, we have been where tourists rarely go or are not allowed to go. We have had meals in picturesque restaurants, personal tours by local guides, a fashion show, concerts and plays, and because we are from UNB, in past years we had special events such as a visit of the Senate with a French Senator, a personal visit of the Sorbonne with one of its vice-presidents, and how can we forget, pastries at the best pastry restaurant in the world, Ladurée, and royal meals at historic restaurants such as Le Procope, Le Bouillon Racine, or Le Grand Colbert.

Here are more great reasons why you should go to Paris.

Jeanne:Thank you for arranging the wonderful experience. Your vision of this travel study program was certainly inspired. I thought of how different our class was from some of the other language and travel programs where the classroom is just moved to another country. You made the other country our classroom. The best of experiential learning.”

Diane: “The instructors were very zealous in their pre-departure explanations and gave us a lot of material to make our trip a successful one on both the academic and “tourist” side.  Because we were expected to be well prepared before the beginning of the trip, we had more time to fully live the France experience. Because of that, I enjoyed myself tremendously, got to see Paris under a different light, lived a “cousin” type relationship with our Poitiers Acadian cousins.  All in all a marvellous trip.”

Tom: “An excellent learning model for me. The world is the classroom. Students from other universities were at FIAP and had to attend classrooms in Paris. What a shame, when the best classroom such as the Louvre was right at hand. Profs Viau and Passaris used their classrooms, i.e. Bank of France, sights of Paris exceptionally. […] Profs Viau and Passaris were able to expose each student to French culture, food and culinary expertise, literature, and philosophies in a teaching manner that all would merit from and appreciate.”

Philip: “This is an extremely economical way to visit Paris, one of the world's most expensive cities. Accommodations and meals were excellent. Far better than I had anticipated. I'd say both were first class for cost. I would advise anyone who can, to take the session. It allows one to experience two aspects of France visitors seldom see in one trip: Paris + provinces. The concern shown for all students and the attention to each one of us was marvellous. I left with the impression of a consummate professor. I was truly awed by Dr. Viau's patience and his intimate knowledge of Paris. Speaking and lecturing on Parisian streets is an art which he has perfected.”

Ella: “Definitely recommended! The classes were basically tours lead either by the UNB profs or tour guides, and we only ever sat indoors during the final exams, so you really get to see the place. There is a lot of information in just 3 weeks, but the assessments are fairly graded so it balances out. It is also a great opportunity to meet different UNB students in different years and programs you otherwise would never see… I had a great group and everyone got along very well!”

Arielle: “France was one of my dream locations, Paris was a dream. As for Poitiers, I had never heard of it, but it was so charming and beautiful, we got to see all these different parts, that I wouldn’t even know about if was planning this by myself as a tourist. The French and World Literature course components were also very important.”
