Currie Scholars 2023-24

Four outstanding high school students are winners of the prestigious Currie Undergraduate Scholarships at the University of New Brunswick.

The scholarships, valued at $65,000 each, were established in 2004 by one of Canada’s most accomplished business leaders and philanthropists, UNB Chancellor Emeritus Dr. Richard J. Currie, who was a Beaverbrook scholar as a young man. Each year, the Currie Scholarships recognize Atlantic Canadian high school students for their potential leadership skills, present community involvement, academic success and obstacles overcome.

This year’s recipients are Casey Flanagan, Seth Foster, Mikayla MacPhee, and Marin MacPherson.

Casey Flanagan of Saint John, N.B. is in grade 12 at Harbour View High School, where she is vice-president of the student representative council. Casey plays for her school’s volleyball and rowing teams and is captain of its softball team. Among her many school activities are the student newspaper and Best Buddies, an international organization that promotes friendships and inclusion. In addition to being a member of the New Brunswick Provincial Student Council, her commitment to her community has led to her attaining gold in the Duke of Edinburgh International Award program. Casey will begin the bachelor of nursing program on UNB’s Fredericton campus in September.

Seth Foster of Moncton, N.B. is a student at Bernice MacNaughton High School, where he is student council president and captain of the football team. In addition to football, Seth plays volleyball for his high school as well as basketball, baseball, and minor league hockey in the community. Seth will begin the bachelor of science in engineering program in September on UNB’s Fredericton campus.

Mikayla MacPhee of Kingston, N.B. will graduate in June from Hampton High School. Mikayla is the grade 12 representative on the school’s student council as well as being editor and photographer for the yearbook. A competitive dancer, Mikayla works year-round to prepare for competitions. She will begin the bachelor of nursing program on UNB’s Saint John campus in September.

Marin MacPherson of Quispamsis, N.B. is a student at Kennebecasis Valley High School, where she is a member of student council, editor of the yearbook, and captain of the field hockey team. Marin has also represented her school and community in soccer, basketball, badminton, cross country, and track and field. She works as a lifeguard and swim instructor and has volunteered with French for the Future as a national ambassador and with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She has attended the prestigious SHAD program and was awarded the Vimy Pilgrimage Award for her community service and dedication. Marin will begin the bachelor of science in engineering program on UNB’s Fredericton campus in September.

The Currie Undergraduate Scholarships are awarded to students beginning a degree program at UNB upon graduation from a high school in any of the four Atlantic provinces. These scholarships, which essentially pay all costs associated with any four-year undergraduate program, are intended to support the education of future leaders.

Dr. Currie started university at UNB and ended with an MBA from Harvard. He served as UNB Chancellor from 2003 to 2013 and became Chancellor Emeritus in May 2014. Dr. Currie played a fundamental role in the development, design, and financing of the state-of-the-art Richard J. CURRIE CENTER on UNB’s Fredericton campus. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, a member of the Order of New Brunswick, and a Companion of the Canadian Business Hall of Fame.
