Reopen timeline

As URec reopens, all programs, services & facility access will follow a phased reopening approach.

Phase One – starting Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2020

Strength Centre spaces; strength, cardio & stretch areas available

  • First floor Strength Centre capacity: 6 members
  • Third floor Strength Centre capacity: 34 members

Indoor track (2nd floor, CURRIE CENTER); only walking permitted (no jogging)

  • Indoor track capacity: 10 members

SMA Pool; lap swim & dive tank only

  • Lap swim capacity: 6 members (1 swimmer per lane)
  • Dive tank capacity: 3 members
  • Occupational testing; including PARE & FFE.

Phase Two – Monday, June 7, 2021

New Changes

  • Capacity at the CURRIE CENTER will increase to 40 members per booking as of Monday, June 7.
  • Open Recreation will return Monday, June 7.
  • Personal Training will return Monday, June 14.
  • Group Fitness will return in July.
  • Booking in advance for workout and swim times will continue to be required. 
  • Locker rooms will be available for changing beginning Monday, June 7. However, lockers and showers remain closed at this time. 

Strength Centre spaces; strength, cardio & stretch areas available

  • First floor Strength Centre capacity: 6 members
  • Third floor Strength Centre capacity: 40 members

Indoor track (2nd floor, CURRIE CENTER); only walking permitted (no jogging)

  • Indoor track capacity: 10 members
  • Space at the far end of the track is available for individual activities. Punching bags, battle ropes, and TRX systems remain unavailable at this time.

Open Recreation (Recreation Gym)

  • Open Recreation Capacity: 6 members per court (max 12 people in the Recreation Gym). 
  • Available Activities: 
    • Basketball - Individuals to stay at a single hoop switching nets is not permitted. A maximum of 3 individuals per hoop. Individual drills and shooting at a single hoop.  Games that permit distancing (21, horse, etc).
    • Badminton - Individuals to stay on a single badminton court, switching courts is not permitted.  One individual per side of the badminton court. Individual drills and singles (1 vs 1 games) are permitted. 
    • Pickleball - Individuals to stay on a single badminton court for the entire time slot.  One individual per side of the badminton court. Individual drills and singles (1 vs 1 games) are permitted.
    • Table Tennis - Individuals to stay on a single table for the entire time slot (if multiple tables are available).  One individual per side of the table. Individual drills and singles (1 vs 1 games) are permitted.
    • Partner Activities (e.g., Throw & Catch) - Individuals to stay on Side 1 or Side 2 of the Rec Gym for the entire time slot.  Individuals must ensure social distancing occurs. Throw and catch partner activities that contacts non-skin areas and are spaced at a minimum of 2 meters are permitted.  For example, using a racket with ball/shuttle.
    • Nets for badminton and pickleball are available for set up. 
  • Available Equipment: Basketballs only. Members are encouraged to bring their own equipment at this time.
  • Members are required to book a workout time at the CURRIE CENTER in order to access the Recreation Gym.  

SMA Pool; lap swim & dive tank only

  • Lap swim capacity: 6 members (1 swimmer per lane)
  • Dive tank capacity: 3 members

Personal training, fitness testing & Living Well with Diabetes Initiative

  • Personal Training will return Monday, June 14
  • Sessions will take place in the Private Training Studio on the 3rd floor of the Richard J. CURRIE CENTER. 
  • Available equipment: A variety of dumbbells, adjustable bench, landmine (barbell setup), TRX (wall mounted), bands and mini bands, variety of kettlebells, battle rope, Concept2 Rowing Machine, and Upright Exercise Bike. 
  • Sessions are limited to 1 hour only. 
  • Members will be required to book a session with their trainer in advance.
  • Occupational testing continues to run at this time. For individuals interested in setting up testing sessions please contact Caitlin Doyle at caitlin.doyle@unb.ca or 506.453.4603. 

Group Fitness

  • In-Person, Group Fitness is scheduled to return in July. The July schedule will be a blend of both in-person and virtual group fitness classes.
  • Members are required to register in advance for a group fitness class.
  • There will be limited capacity in the fitness studios. 
  • The majority of equipment will be available for members to use. Members are expected to bring their own yoga mats. 
  • More information regarding in-person classes will be shared with all members as it becomes available.

  • Intramural programs & sport clubs
  • Other programs (Fee-based programs & children's swim lessons)
