Meet our peer mentors

Chiara MacPherson

Chiara, RC peer mentor

Hi friends! I’m from a small town on the other side of the county – a little place called Elkford, aka the “wilderness capital of British Columbia.” I am going into my sixth year at UNB and my fourth year at Renaissance College. I started at UNB in the Arts and Sciences faculties, and then transferred into the RC program in 2017 with a minor in Biology.

I am an executive student leader for UNB and STU’s InterVarsity club on campus. You can often find me around RC, at various UNB events, or on the main campus at the library in Head Hall. After graduating from UNB, I plan to pursue another degree in either social work or secondary education – I’m really interested in some sort of career that involves youth and social justice! I look forward to meeting you in the fall! Chiara.MacPherson@unb.ca

Mariel Horncastle

Mariel, RC peer mentor

Hi everyone! My name is Mariel and I'm from Fredericton, New Brunswick. I’m a third-year student here at RC but am doing the 4-year route, so technically I’m part of two cohorts at the College. I am pursuing the MCAT stream minor up on the hill and plan on applying to medical school in a few years! In addition to being a Peer Mentor.

I am also the Orientation Representative for the Renaissance College Society, an Alternate Proctor on campus, and a volunteer swimming coach for New Brunswick’s Special Olympics team! Something you need to know about me is that I absolutely love to travel.

I visited 29 countries and 5 continents solo all before my 20th birthday (and maxed out my credit card 3 separate times along the way). As my friends can certainly attest to, the only thing I enjoy more than travelling is TALKING about travelling, so if you’re ever in the mood to talk bucket lists and adventures… you know who to come to! mariel.horncastle@unb.ca, (506) 461-8166

Kate Tucker

Kate, RC Peer Mentor

Hello, everyone! My name is Kate and I am a second-year student at Renaissance College. I am from Corner Brook, Newfoundland but I have also lived in Ottawa and BC. I am pursuing the MCAT minor and aspire to be involved in health care after RC.

When I'm not studying you can find me as the Ed Proctor in Harrison House, lifeguarding at the SMA pool, making art and music at Memorial Hall or at the Currie Center gym. I hope you are all doing as well as possible and finding ways to take care of yourselves. I am so excited to chat with and meet you all! kate.tucker@unb.ca

Sophia McKee

Sophia, RC peer mentor

Hello hello hello first years! My name is Sophia and I am one of your peer mentors for the upcoming school year! Before starting school in Fredericton, I lived in a small mountain town in California where I grew to love spending all my time outdoors, whether that meant skiing, hiking or backpacking.

I am currently in my second year at RC, and while I have yet to pick a specific minor, I am leaning towards International Development Studies or Political Science. In the upcoming school year, I will be one of the second year representatives on Renaissance College Society as well as a Proctor in MacKenzie House (woop woop)! I am so excited to get to know you all, and if you have any questions at all, please reach out!! :) smckee@unb.ca, (760) 709-6532

Xiuming Shi

Xiuming, RC Peer Mentor

My name is Xiuming, and I am entering my third year at RC this upcoming school year with a minor in biology. I was born in Japan, grew up in Canada and a couple of places in the States before settling here in Fredericton. Some previous things I have been involved in include: rowing for the crew team first year, a second-year rep for RCS, and a redshirt for Orientation Week in my second year.

For the upcoming school year, I will be an RCS third year rep and your RC rep for the UNBSU. After I graduate from RC next year, I hope to be studying medicine to pursue my dream of becoming a family physician. If you have any questions about RC, please don't hesitate to ask me or any of the other peer mentors. We would love to answer them! Also, for those of you who are interested in the medical school path, please do not hesitate to reach out to me! I will gladly answer any questions that you may have. xiuming.shi@unb.ca, (514) 836-8130

Brennan Marks

Brennan Marks, RC Peer Mentor

Hi Everyone, my name is Brennan Marks and I’m entering my third year of RC completing the MCAT Option. I’m from Pictou, Nova Scotia, but proud to call Fredericton my home away from home returning for my second year as a Proctor, this year in Aitken House.

I am involved in many aspects of the UNB community, as the President of the Renaissance College Society, the Inclusion Representative on the UNBSU, and a member of the UNB S.P.R.I.N.G. Executive! After RC I hope to complete a Master’s in Public Health and eventually attend Medical School. I am so excited to be one of your peer mentors this year and hope you will reach out with any questions you have! bmarks2@unb.ca
