Meet our peer mentors

 Mariel Horncastle

Mariel, RC peer mentor

Hi everyone! As more incoming students continue to be added to this group I thought that I’d get the ball rolling on some introductions!
My name is Mariel and I’m both a Peer Mentor and the Renaissance College Society President for the upcoming year. I’m going into my fourth and final year at RC, and am pursuing the MCAT-preperatory stream minor. After graduating from RC next spring I plan on doing my Masters, and then eventually applying to medical school. Something you need to know about me is that I absolutely love to travel. I visited 29 countries and 5 continents solo all before my 20th birthday (and maxed out my credit card 3 separate times along the way). As my friends can certainly attest to, the only thing I enjoy more than travelling is TALKING about travelling, so if you’re ever in the mood to talk bucket lists and adventures… you know who to come to! Also, as you can see, I am both outwardly and unapologetically obsessed with my cat, which you will learn very quickly once we meet in person.
As many of you have heard, RC is unique and special in many ways. No two people here are the same, and the variety of interests, strengths, and personalities across the board is astounding. We are SO excited to welcome you all into our little community, and we cannot wait to meet you in person this fall!

Kate Tucker

Kate Tucker

Hello everyone! My name is Kate Tucker (she/her) and I am one of your Peer Mentors this year! I will also be your RCS treasurer and a proctor in residence so I will see you lovely on-campus folks around quite a bit!

I am from Corner Brook, Newfoundland and am going into my 3rd year at RC. I am pursuing a minor in MCAT prep studies and am planning to complete a masters and eventually study medicine.

A fun fact about me is that I was a competitive artistic swimmer for 11 years! Some more fun facts are that I love my golden retriever Toby (he’s much bigger than he was in this photo now), doing anything active and outside, going on adventures and eating yummy food!

I adore Renaissance College and can’t wait for you all to experience the wonderful program and people, I am so excited to meet you all and hope everyone is having a wonderful summer so far!

Callum Hunter

Callum Hunter

Hi everyone! I'll jump in next for introductions. My name is Callum, I'm from Calgary Alberta. I have a dog named George who you can see lurking under my feet in the photo 🙂 I am also a Peer Mentor and I will be Renaissance College Society's Secretary this coming year. I'll also be a proctor in residence this year, so I might see some of you living on campus! I'm headed into my third year at RC, and I'll be finishing up the program this year but I'll stick around on campus next year to complete my double minor in Political Science and Psychology. My plan is to go to law school after I finish this degree.

A fun fact about me is that I've been on Swiss television twice: I'm a highland dancer and I danced on the Basel International Tattoo Highland Dance Team in 2018 and 2019. My dream is to go back at least once more and to someday dance in the Edinburgh Tattoo. If any of you are (or want to be!) dancers, I'll be teaching at the Nicole Odo dance school come the fall so you're welcome to come join me 🙂

I'm sure many of you are nervous about heading into university, whether you're leaving home or staying in Fredericton and starting a new chapter in your life. If I can say anything to reassure you, it's that making friends at RC will be one hundred times easier than you expect and you will have an amazing school family in no time. It'll be an extra special year to come after we've spent this year apart, and we cannot wait to have you be a part of the celebration that starts in the fall and will go all year long! Feel free to reach out at any time if you have questions or just want a friend to talk to!
