Prior to teaching at UNB Saint John, Stephen Clarke was a public accounting practitioner for 21 years with Grant Thornton LLP Chartered Accountants including 10 years as a partner. During that time, Stephen's practice involved a concentration in auditing, complex accounting matters and business consulting in the various sectors including manufacturing & distribution, construction and worker's compensation. Following public accounting practice, Stephen became a Senior Manager, Finance Standards, Governance and Control with Irving Oil Limited for 19 years, specializing in IFRS accounting, complex accounting resolution, accounting education, Finance policy development and internal control/quality control over External Financial Reporting.

Stephen holds a Bachelor of Commerce - cum Laude '79 (Dalhousie) and Chartered Accountancy Designation, CPA, CA '81 (ICANS/NBICA) and has extensive IFRS accounting education through the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants ("CICA").

Stephen is a Past Board Member and Past Chair of the Atlantic School of Chartered Accountancy Board, a Past Council Member and Past President of the New Brunswick Institute of Chartered Accountants ("NBICA") and a Past Member of the CICA's UFE Board of Evaluators. In 1997, Stephen was elected a Fellow of the NBICA for distinguished service to the accounting profession (FCPA, FCA).

Stephen is a current panelist with the CPANB's Discipline Hearing Process Panel, is active in his church and enjoys music (he is a percussionist) and follows a strict daily exercise routine. Stephen immensely enjoys and has spent his career mentoring and coaching others in the financial and accounting areas.
